Grow with Crowe #3

In my ‘Grow with Crowe’ series, I will be speaking to some of our new starters in the Thames Valley office about their experience so far, why Crowe works for them and how they’ve been able to grow in their new roles.

This time, I speak with Max – a 2023 addition to our Corporate Tax team.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I am a Corporate Tax Manager at Crowe, specialising mainly in large and listed international groups and Private Equity backed businesses. I have worked in Corporate Tax for seven and a half years and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with the ICAEW.

During my first year of studying Accounting and Finance at Bournemouth University I needed to choose my modules for the second and final year of my studies. The University was offering an Accounting and Tax course that I found out was the only tax focused course in the UK at the time. The topics looked quite interesting, and I thought it would be a good way to stand out and create a discussion point in interviews. I also completed a twelve month industrial placement in finance during my degree where I gained some experience within their tax department. I enjoyed the course and work experience and felt that tax was an area that suited my skillsets, so I applied for and accepted a corporate tax graduate role and have been working in tax ever since!

Away from work I like to watch sports, and played a bit more when I was younger, particularly football - ?I am an Exeter City fan. I also like going out to the theatre, comedy shows and playing video games, especially a bit of Mario Kart.

What have been the highlights so far?

The Crowe National Tax Conference took place on my third and fourth working days which was a bit daunting given I did not really know anyone within my team, let alone other offices so there were a lot of introductions, but it was a good opportunity to meet new colleagues.

From a work perspective I have been involved in a few interesting projects already - highlight has been assisting a client that has an unusual ownership structure with the sale of their current operating site land and purchase and fit out of a new facility. This had a lot of interesting areas to consider from a tax perspective and was something new to be involved with.

What made Crowe stand out when you were looking for a new role?

Throughout the interview process the main area that stood out to me was how much Crowe seemed to care about their employees and their welfare, ensuring that the workplace had a good environment for its people to thrive and feel valued. After a couple of interviews I also met a few people within the team that I would be working with who were positive about the culture at Crowe and that it was a good place to work.

How does working at Crowe compare to your last role? What are the key differences and why do you feel these suit you?

I have a similar technical role to my previous firm, providing tax compliance and advisory services to large corporates, so the key differences are around the culture and team environment. I feel there is a focus on work/life balance at Crowe that suits me and allows me to work hard but also enjoy where I work and the people I work with.

I also like coming into the office as I am more productive and it helps my development, and at Crowe I know I can be in the office when it works and there will always be other people in to collaborate with.

What would you say to anyone else thinking about coming to work for Crowe?

I would definitely recommend working at Crowe to other people. If you ever consider a career at Crowe then take the opportunity - you won’t regret it!
