ASABE AE 50 Awards
The big news around CABA these days are the accolades we are getting from the scientific community.
Our lead engineer and resident mad scientist Brett Horstketter is being recognized by ASABE (American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, phew!) with the prestigious AE50 Award for 2023. Now that doesn’t mean much to many of us in the day-to-day cannabis world, but in the scientific community, it’s kind of a big deal.
Brett was selected for the award because of his development of The CABA DLI Detective. It’s just a little something he whipped up when he wasn’t, you know, designing superior horticultural lighting products. That’s just the kind of guy he is. He is a force of creativity and positivity on everything to which he sets his mind. Not only that, he’s one of the more down-to-earth and friendly people you’d ever have the hopes to meet.
We can't think of anyone more deserving.
But what is the DLI Detective?
Well, for anyone growing anything under the sun, it’s a powerful resource. And it’s free.
When navigating to DLI-Detective, the user can enter simply their email and geographic location and the detective will come back in seconds with a comprehensive report of the Daily Light Integral for your exact location based on a compilation of five years of NASA Power Project data, all broken down for you by month, measured in mols. All in an easy-to-digest graph or a simple chart. Your choice.
For the folks in greenhouses, this tool is invaluable in helping growers not only plan their crops but also make much more informed decisions when purchasing supplemental lighting and designing lighting schedules for each individual crop. Whether it’s cannabis or cucumbers, zinnias or zucchini, the DLI Detective has your crop covered.
The grower can even enter a target DLI and account for the material from which their greenhouse is constructed, in order to compensate for the light that will be lost passing through it.
It’s eloquent. It’s simple. And it’s free.
ASABE recognized it as one of the most innovative things that they had seen all year.
But, we can’t help but wonder if Brett isn’t a little disappointed that he didn’t win for his other submission instead- the CABA CT-141 one to one HPS replacement fixture. It’s also eloquent and simple, not to mention reliable and super light. It’s only 12 pounds, lighter than anything else on the market, with a smaller profile to boot. That means a light that is less stress on your greenhouse infrastructure as well as safer to install and maintain.
And with the DLI-Detective and a consultation with our team, you’d know exactly how many to purchase, how to deploy them and how to maximize their impact on your farm and your bottom line.
Check it out and help us celebrate Brett's achievement!

We're Adding Military Precision
CABA is proud to announce the addition of Morgan MacLeod, M.S. to our team.
Morgan is a sales manager and US Army veteran of more than eleven years. Morgan holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point, as well as a Master of Science in Organizational Management and Leadership. He specializes in Leadership, Organizational Strategy, and Performance Management.?
Upon leaving the service in 2021, Morgan has discovered a new passion within the cannabis consulting industry.
He also supports several grassroots campaigns to ensure that veterans have access to medical-use cannabis, rather than the prescriptions so often pushed on veterans by the Veterans Administration.
In his spare time, Morgan enjoys spending time with his four rescue dogs, tinkering with off-grid sustainable energy, tending to his array of more than eighty houseplants (in addition to his outdoor garden) and thinking of ways to make the world a better place. ?
