They stay awake to ensure you sleep
He's surrounded by urban glitz but Raj Kumar says it's pointless when there's no time to check out any of the attractions. "I've been working here for seven years but haven't had a day to spare for the city's beautiful malls and popular hotspots," says Kumar, one among nearly 40,000 private security guards working in Gurgaon. Rapid commercial development in and around the financial hub has created unprecedented demand for security services that can only be catered to by private players. The sector is naturally labour-intensive and the men and women who form its backbone are drawn largely from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Behind their smart appearances are stories of low pay, few employee benefits and 12-hour shifts of drudgery. The bigger the employer, the lesser the concern for human resources, says Surender Singh, owner of a security company, adding that the commercial complexes and gated housing communities which hire guards treat them as dispensable, unskilled labour. They are forced to rely on informal financing and recruitment networks. Everyone comes through a relative or neighbour and even money is remitted home through trusted travellers. "We sleep during the day and work in the night shift, when another group of eight comes and sleeps in the room," says Rajesh Yadav, from Supaul in Bihar.

250 security firms in Chennai may lose licence
Senior police officers have recommended the cancellation of licences of 250 private security agencies in the state for failing to adhere to norms and not imparting training to the guards they employ. That could mean the shutters for 75 agencies in Chennai and more than 2,000 security guards facing loss of jobs. At least 5,000 guards could lose their livelihood if police close all blacklisted agencies. Tamil Nadu Commando Force commandant and superintendent of police Abhishek Dixit on Wednesday said many agencies did not have even basic training facilities. Police found the owners of some agencies had dubious links and others had submitted fake or non-existent addresses to their jurisdictional police.

Men guarding ATM kiosks are vulnerable
Many incidents have been reported in the city since where security guards have been attacked, though this is the first case after November 2013 where a guard has been killed. There have been proposals in the past to arm the security guards with a light firearm. However, they have been shot down by the police for fear of misuse of the weapons. A senior police official said the private security sector was found wanting in professionalism and employs people even without verification or any training most of the times. “We can’t afford to put firearms in their hands,” he argued, and added that there had been many instances where the guards had turned rogue and looted ATM kiosks or cash transfer vehicles.

ATM thieves snap power after cash withdrawal in Bhopal
Three conmen from Punjab fraudulently withdrew Rs 1.64 crore from different ATMs across country and tricked banks to refund the sum on pretext that money was debited, but not received after punching the withdrawal request. Unlike ATM robbers who uproot the entire machine with cash and decamp, these thieves were innovative and executed their plan with precision. The gang was busted in the city by Madhya Pradesh police on Tuesday after a tipoff from an alert security guard. One member of the gang would wait outside the ATM while other two would go inside and one of them would withdraw money. No sooner would cash come out, than his accomplice would swiftly snap power supply to the ATM. Power would be suspended immediately after cash withdrawal, but just before balance receipts would slip out. Conmen would then lodge a complaint with bank that money was debited from their account, but they did not receive cash.

As police prevent private security agency guards from carrying weapons, cash vans become easy targets. And, on Tuesday, Pune police also took action against seven PSAs for operation here without valid documents. Joint commissioner of police (Pune city), Sunil Ramanand, only said, "The rules are very clear.
