It can be a big decision to sign up for coaching or mentoring. Its an investment in yourself, your FUTURE SELF. Whoever it is you want to be, you’ll get there faster working with a coach or mentor to guide you along the way.
I believe everyone can benefit from coaching and mentoring. And I don’t just say that because I'm a money mindset coach and mentor. I didn’t get to where I am in my personal growth journey on my own, I’ve had to deal with my own mindset blocks that have held me back FOR YEARS, even though I came from a fairly well off family of entrepreneurs.
So you’ve decided its time to take your life and business to the next level. Awesome! The next big question then is whether you go for group coaching or private coaching, and which one is best for you?
There are some differences between them, even if the overall content and concept are the same. Lets take a look at them.
THE HIVE MIND
Ultimately we’re all better together. When you combine the minds of several people, even hundreds of people, in a group setting, everyone benefits from the learnings and experiences shared by others. Different personalities will come up with different ideas and perspectives, its not just you and your mentor hashing out things together.
In a private setting you can take those ideas to a much deeper level together, working out whole business strategies and processes in a shorter amount of time than you can on your own, or in a group.
EXPONENTIAL BREAKTHROUGHS
When you have a breakthrough, one of those OMG moments where your brain literally tingles and your life shifts on its axis, its something you want to share with ‘your people’. A great coach or mentor WANTS to hear your OMG moments and will celebrate them with you. I love being a cheerleader for my clients, and they love that recognition of a special moment or achievement in their growth process.
When you’re in a group environment you’re not only getting high fives from your coach or mentor, you get them from EVERYONE. The collective energy of a cheerleading squad has so much more impact than a lone cheerleader doing a happy dance. The feel good vibes are amplified in a group setting.
EXCLUSIVITY
With private coaching you’re paying for exclusive access to your coach or mentor. Within the boundaries of your agreement, you may have unlimited on-demand access to them, or you may have scheduled weekly sessions with email contact in between. Whatever it is, you’ve got their one on one attention to help you with your greatest challenges and lead you to the results you’re seeking.
With group coaching your contact with your coach or mentor is more limited, depending on how many people are taking part in the group program. If its a smaller group via Zoom you may have the opportunity to share your thoughts, or if its a larger group you may be limited to typing comments and questions in the chat function. Its still exclusive in that nobody outside the community has this kind of access, but its still less contact than private coaching and you don’t have exclusive dibs on their attention for the duration of the session.
SPEED OF RESULTS
We all want results, right? Working with a coach or mentor in private sessions, with their full attention on you, can help you achieve your goals much faster than in a group setting. Theres a greater degree of ‘accountability’, even though nobody can actually hold you accountable and MAKE you do something ??
In a group, you’re largely on your own with getting the work done, nobody will crack a whip and make you get your homework done so you can attend the next session feeling like you know whats going on. However when you’re working alongside others on the same path theres a sense of camaraderie, you’re all on the same journey and its easy to encourage and inspire others to take action.
SAFETY IN NUMBERS
Not everyone is comfortable in a private setting, where the full attention of your coach or mentor is on YOU. Some people are lurkers and prefer to quietly achieve things, occasionally contributing to the group conversation, and enjoying the community vibe. They feel more comfortable being surrounded by like-minded people rather than taking the spotlight in centre stage.
But not everyone is comfortable in a group setting either! There may be challenges you want to resolve but you don’t want to talk about them ‘in public’, but you know you want and NEED to sort it out. Private coaching is a perfect option in this situation, and well worth the investment in yourself.
Working with a coach or mentor can be a deeply personal experience, and making sure the person you choose is the right one FOR YOU is critical. Whether you choose to go with group or private coaching, you want to ensure they resonate with you, that you can trust they’ll help you solve your problem, and you can achieve your desired result.
Personally I love both. I’ve had some incredible insights just from observing what others share in a group coaching environment. I’ve also had some really deep, life-changing conversations in private sessions about things I’d never have shared otherwise.
I’ve paid for group programs that promised personalised mentoring, but I ended up completely underwhelmed at the lack of presence the mentor had in their community. It was all pre-recorded content, no live engagement, and only a weekly accountability post in a Facebook group. The content was good, but I could also have learnt the same from reading his book. By contrast, I’ve taken part in group programs where the mentor is highly engaged, does monthly Q&As to supplement the pre-recorded content, and the community as a whole is a really fun place to be.
I’ve worked one on one with coaches and mentors who listen and have helped me solve my problem, and I’ve also worked with some who DON’T listen, follow their own agenda, and placed limitations on what they think I’m capable of. The lesson here is if something doesn’t feel right to you, it probably isn’t. Trust your instincts, and don’t be afraid to change direction, OR to ask for your money back.
I always recommend you do your research, whatever your preference. The results you can achieve from both group and private coaching is an investment in yourself, and thats truly are priceless.
