GroundTruth's Year in Stories 2023

As 2023 comes to a close, we are looking back on some of the more memorable and impactful work during the last extraordinary year for news.

We want to celebrate the best work of our amazing Report for America and Report for the World corps members and their host newsrooms where they work every day to serve their local communities.

I want to take a moment to congratulate the whole team at The GroundTruth Project, the home of our two flagship programs, which has once again risen to meet the moment and to stay focused on its vital work across America and around the world to support local journalism and to inspire a new generation of reporters to take up a call to service at a time when democracy is truly threatened here in the U.S. and so many corners of the world.

But most of all I want to thank you who are part of our community by following this weekly newsletter and by supporting our work. Without you none of this great local reporting would be possible. A heart-felt thank you.

As we say goodbye to 2023 and prepare to usher in 2024, we have produced a special three-part series for the GroundTruth Weekly that will curate some of the more memorable reporting and storytelling in the field by our Report for America and Report for the World corps members.

In this week’s newsletter, our On The Ground editor Alana Campbell has worked with our team to pull together a story map that will allow you to track the stories and locate them by country. There is so much outstanding work to share and there are many great stories that may not be part of this end-of-year roundup, but we thought these select stories represent the soul of ‘ground truth,’ that is the idea that the best work is done by those who are on the ground serving their communities through local journalism. We hope these stories might engage, enlighten and perhaps even inspire you, and we wish you all best wishes in 2024.

Happy New Year!
