Groundbreaking ceremony for Wawa in Sussex County’s northernmost location

Wawa officials look forward to partnering with new community groups following the opening of the first Wawa store in Sussex County on Friday, 10th December 2021.

At the former Chatterbox Drive-in site, where Route 15 meets Route 206, a ceremony was held with local business and government leaders in attendance. There are more than 900 Wawa outlets along the east coast; this will be the first in the county and the northernmost.

In Sussex County, Wawa is venturing into uncharted territory, but its employees spoke Friday about keeping close ties to the local community.

With a donation of $2,000 to the SCARC Foundation, an organization that assists individuals with disabilities, Wawa has proven its commitment to the community. SCARC members will help to run a food pantry to distribute necessary items to county residents with the help of the money. The money will specifically go to SCARC’s Harvest Home Foods initiative.

Two new stores are planned for Sussex County within the next two years, one on Route 206 and Lackawanna Drive in Byram, and another on Route 206 and Cherry Lane in Hampton. Christina Zipf, Wawa’s real estate manager, said both facilities will open in 2023.
