The Groove Within: Mastering the Art of Self-Guidance When Feeling Stuck"

One of the most common types of feedback I receive from individuals I coach is that they gain a broader perspective on their situations through coaching. That I "unstick them" from their current perspective. It's not surprising, as we all tend to get caught up in our own thinking from time to time. While we recognise the value of seeking help from friends, peers, or coaches, why is it often challenging for us to provide the same level of support to ourselves? In this blog post, we'll explore a simple analogy about this phenomenon and share four simple steps to help you navigate those moments of feeling overwhelmed and stuck.

Have you ever noticed that when you're feeling stuck, your mind gets trapped in a repetitive thought pattern? It's similar to a record needle that's stuck in a groove on a vinyl record, endlessly playing the same section of music. Our thoughts can be like that too, replaying the same pattern over and over again, just a few notes from the entire composition. But if we take this analogy further and recognise that we're merely stuck in that groove, what instinctively comes to mind? Moving the needle, right? Because deep down, we know that we're not defined by that one repetitive snippet, but rather by the entirety of the music.

While having a coach, peer, or friend can be immensely beneficial to help us see how we are caught up, it's freeing to recognise that you too possess the ability to assist yourself in such times of overwhelm.

Steps to help yourself when feeling stuck in the groove.

  1. Check the record: When you find yourself trapped in a repetitive thought pattern, it's time to check the record. Just like lifting the needle from a stuck groove, take a moment to look up and see a different view. Our heavy thinking narrows our vision, causing us to miss the bigger picture. Shifting your perspective can bring fresh insights and open up new possibilities.
  2. Take the needle off the turntable: Create distance between yourself and the situation that's causing stress. Step away from the relentless spin of thoughts. Take a break, engage in a different activity, or immerse yourself in nature. By temporarily detaching yourself, you give your mind space to relax and gain clarity. Stepping off the turntable allows you to break free from the repetitive loop. Remember that self-care is not selfish; it's an essential part of personal growth and well-being.
  3. Flip to Side B: Flip to side B and discover the hidden tracks of your inner wisdom. Treat yourself as the valuable album you are with all the music you need inside of you. You are so much more than the thoughts you are stuck in in this moment. Opening your mind up to the endless new thoughts and new possibilities about your situation.
  4. Reflect on the Melodies: Practice self-reflection and create a space for quiet contemplation. Reflect on the melodies of your mind, listening for the harmonies that bring clarity and insight. Through this process, you'll uncover the hidden gems and find your way to a clearer, more harmonious state.

These steps help us to break free from the stuck needle of repetitive thought patterns, allow us to naturally seek new perspectives, and embrace self-care and reflection as essential tools for navigating the grooves of our mind and accessing the beautiful music inside all of us.
