Grockles.

It’s a loaded term.

It means a 600% population increase across Devon and Cornwall. It means four thousand five hundred calls and emails fielded by the police every day.

It means hundreds of millions generated from tourism. It means – in the words of one local – that Grockles bring their own accidents with them.

I have spent over ten years photographing the mixing pot between Devon and the outside world. My art looks at the relationship not just between people and place, but of local and outsider.

Grockle is a slur used to describe those outsiders – this series uses that as a springboard to explore the realities of life on the south coast.

It encompasses the wild abandon of an English summer and the reality of numbers on a page – revenue, crime rates and population increases.

It is, in other words, the story of modern England.
