GRIT. DO YOU HAVE IT?

GRIT. DO YOU HAVE IT?

3 reasons why GRIT is valuable in the workplace.

First you ask…….what is GRIT?

I just read a book by Angela Duckworth, GRIT: Passion, Perseverance, and the Science of Success. Great book! I recommend it for all managers, leaders, and individuals looking to get to their potential. GRIT is simply a trait based on an individual’s passion for a long term goal coupled with their motivation to achieve that objective.

Gritty people are courageous

While "courage" is hard to measure, it is directly related to the person’s level of GRIT. Fear of failure does not affect the gritty, they thrive on it. Instead, it is viewed as part of the process, and they learn from mistakes and failures. Consider the GRITTY HALL OF FAME: Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, or Harriet Tubman (I’m sure you can think of more)

Thomas Edison – Failed 1000 times before inventing the light bulb

Abraham Lincoln – Failed at business and lost countless elections before being                      elected as 16th President of the United States

Harriet Tubman – Risked her life countless times leading hundreds of slaves to freedom

Gritty people are achievement oriented

The achievement oriented individual is one who is persistent, works tirelessly, tries to do a good job, and completes the job at hand. This person shows up day in and day out with their A game.

Gritty people have resilience

Even among the most successful, there will be times when someone stumbles and must get back up. Resilience is what gives the person the strength to bounce back. Resilience is the combination of optimism, creativity, and confidence.

So why should a leader recruit and hire a candidate with GRIT? Because that employee will do whatever it takes to get the job done. That person will likely be optimistic and very resilient. And most importantly, willing to take a chance to solve problems.

So what is your GRIT score?
