They say pain and pleasure are very intimately linked, literally one step away from pleasure, we find pain and vice versa. It's the same with a relationship.
I'm not just talking about lovers or intimate relationships either. All relationships. Business relationships, family relationships, platonic relationships, intimate relationships. When they end it's akin to losing someone through death.
We grieve. We're bereaved. It uproots our expectations, our security and most of all we lose that part of ourselves we became familiar with in that relationship and suddenly we're exposed. It's like having our clothes stripped away in public and we react by travelling through the different stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.
It's important to remember that if someone you know is going through or has experienced a breakup, your support is paramount whether you agree it should happen or not.
It's not a trivial matter at all and despite what Facebook tells you, or how the Instagram posts look, it can be quite a disruptive and challenging time for the parties involved.
Just be there if someone needs you to talk and likewise, make sure you know who you can talk to as well. Look for your support network.
I have a single coming out on 9th August all about how deeply cutting a breakup can be called 'Waltzing In' because I'd love to raise more awareness about grief following a breakup and how it can affect both mental and emotional health.
