A grid-scale battery, also known as a utility-scale battery or large-scale battery, is a large energy storage system designed to store and manage electricity at the scale of the electrical grid. These batteries are used to balance supply and demand, store excess energy generated from renewable sources like wind and solar, provide backup power, and improve the stability and reliability of the grid.

Lithium-ion batteries: Common due to their high energy density, efficiency, and decreasing costs.
Flow batteries: Utilize liquid electrolytes and are known for long cycle life and scalability.
Sodium-sulfur (NaS) batteries: Operate at high temperatures and are suitable for long-duration storage.
Lead-acid batteries: Traditional technology, less common for new installations due to lower energy density.

peak generating or transmission capacity can be reduced by the total potential of all storage plus deferrable loads (see?demand side management), saving the expense of this capacity
more stable pricing – the cost of the storage or demand management is included in pricing so there is less variation in power rates charged to customers, or alternatively (if rates are kept stable by law) less loss to the utility from expensive on-peak wholesale power rates when peak demand must be met by imported wholesale power.

? Rated power capacity is the total possible instantaneous discharge capability (in kilowatts [kW] or megawatts [MW]) of the BESS, or the maximum rate of discharge that the BESS can achieve, starting from a fully charged state.
?? Energy capacity is the maximum amount of stored energy (in kilowatt-hours [kWh] or megawatt-hours [MWh])
?? Storage duration is the amount of time storage can discharge at its power capacity before depleting its energy capacity. For example, a battery with 1 MW of power capacity and 4 MWh of usable energy capacity will have a storage duration of four hours.
