Grid Reliability and the Energy Transition

Grid Reliability and the Energy Transition

This graph published in the Financial Times in an article on August 8th shows that power outages have increased in frequency and that the grid has been less reliable in the last five years than it had been in the previous fifteen years.

Number of Power Outages in the U.S.: 2000 to 2023

In a recent Wall Street Journal opinion piece on August 9th, John Baer, the CEO of Midcontinental Independent Systems Operator explains why.? He stated that the energy transition poses “material, adverse challenges to electric reliability,” and that wind and solar power “lack certain key reliability attributes that are needed to keep the grid reliable every hour of the year.”

A transition from fossil fuels directly to renewables will likely sacrifice reliability and the frequency of power outages may increase. This is why our Eco strategies invest in grid reliability.
