"Grenade" Exposes Violence Against Women in the United States Military

Jane Hickey Caminos has released the most recent painting in her artist activist series "On Women Bound", an oil on linen, 24"x 30".

The narrative "Grenade" explores the rape of hundreds of female service members by their male counterparts in all branches of the United States armed forces. Despite awareness training designed to "sensitize" male service members, the number of rapes and generalized violence against women soldiers and sailors continues to rise. A definitive figure has been difficult to come by because women who have experienced such violence at the hands of their male fellow combatants are reticent to come forward to their superior officers, most often men themselves, who either deny such behavior exists or warn the women away from "making trouble". A female who registers a formal protest can expect to be harassed by men in her unit, even to the point of being endangered or not supported on the battlefield.

Jane, thanks for trying to bring this problem to everyone's attention. I'm slightly familiar with what the Army has been doing to try and stem this but I haven't a clue about the rest of the services. The Army brass who have tried to make changes still run into opposition from the entrenched old guard boys network, but progress is being made. If only we could wave a magic wand and fix things, unfortunately life doesn't work like that.
