Gregg Allman - Onward my Brother, by Jimmy Hotz

Today I learned that Gregg Allman has passed away. I had the privilege to work with Gregg while I was on the road with Leon Russell. Gregg like so many other Rock Legends had a deep and sincere respect for Leon and would make the effort to come sit in as a guest performer, when their schedules permitted.

Interestingly enough it was Mike Lawler, a former member of the Allman Brothers Band, who had recommend me to Leon Russell and arranged for our first meeting. Mike is an amazing talent and we have worked on a number of recording projects together over the years.

Regarding the impact that Gregg and the Allman Brothers Band have made, most listings of the "Greatest Southern Rock Bands of All-Time" will place the Allman Brothers at #1, which I believe is well-deserved. The Allman Brothers have certainly become icons of Southern Rock and they have influenced countless musicians.

In their "Rock & Roll - Hall of Fame" induction ceremony, they were referred to as "The Principal Architects of Southern Rock". Many of their greatest songs such as “Ramblin’ Man”, “Whipping Post”, “Midnight Rider”, “Melissa” and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" are all worth a re-listen as we reflect on the life of Gregg Allman.

While it is certainly true that you will instantly recognize Duane Allman's guitar playing the same can be said for Gregg's soulful singing.

Gregg, may God grant you Peace and Grand new Adventure in the Eternal Realm.

Onward my Brother,

Wow! Thank you for the story. How long were you on the road with him?
