Greenwood ready to deliver first phase of National Highways project | G News
Greenwood Plants Ltd
Specialists in landscape supply to the new build property, commercial, and infrastructure sectors
Welcome to the June edition of G News, a month in which the summer weather has arrived, following a spring which brought a lot of rainfall.
This month, we were delighted to announce that we have completed the first phase of our National Highways-backed Three Million Trees project, with representatives visiting to inspect the young trees, and take a tour of our nurseries. The first deliveries are expected to be made very soon, going to community projects across the country, and enhancing the biodiversity of local ecosystems.
As well as this, our Greenwood Community scheme has been extremely busy, with us already surpassing the halfway mark of our 2024 target of 24 plant donations.

Greenwood Plants is ready to deliver first phase of National Highways’ Three Million Trees project
Greenwood is preparing for the first delivery of the Three Million Trees project with National Highways in the forthcoming 2024/2025 season. Representatives from the government agency visited Greenwood’s nurseries on 19th June to inspect the first batch of native trees grown from seed and discuss its plans for planting as part of hand-selected community interest projects across the UK.??
Greenwood Community update - June 2024
Greenwood Community is our plant donation scheme, which involves collaborating with local schools, environmental groups, and charitable organisations, to donate a wide variety of different plants, shrubs, and trees. The aim is to help enhance green spaces, positively contributing to the biodiversity of the local ecosystem. 2024 has so far been a hive of activity for our community initiative, with 11 donations already having been made, and plenty more in the works for the rest of the year. The types of project have also been refreshingly eclectic, ranging from sensory gardens, to willow tunnels, and everything in between.

Planting for exposed sites
There are always a number of considerations that need to be made when beginning to design a planting scheme. The quality, makeup and acidity of the soil, the drainage of the site, and whether an area has sufficient run-off, or whether the area is prone to waterlogging. Precipitation itself is also important to consider, as well as the direction the area will face, and how much direct sunlight the green space will receive. Among many others, one other major characteristic of a site, which must be considered before selecting plants and designing a scheme, is the site’s shelter, or conversely, its exposure.
Plant focus - Geranium
Geranium derives its name from the Greek term “geranos,” which means “crane,” in reference to the shape of its fruits which resemble the beak of a crane. Native to temperate regions of the world, including Europe, Asia and North America, geranium is prized for its hardiness and adaptability, characteristics that make it a popular choice in planting schemes worldwide. Geraniums are herbaceous perennials that feature palmate, deeply lobed leaves, often with serrated edges, that range from bright green to silver-grey. Their flowers are generally five-petalled and offer a range of colours, including white, pink, red, blue and purple, creating a pleasant visual effect in gardens and landscapes. They flower in spring and summer, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies, positively contributing to the biodiversity of the local habitat.
