Greenline - A Grand Plan

Greenline - A Grand Plan

If you are not a resident of the City of Melbourne, or you don't keep a very close eye on open space projects around the country you would be forgiven for having not heard of Greenline. But you should.

A four-kilometre green trail along the Yarra would represent Melbourne’s “biggest transformation” since the opening of Federation Square in 2002.

The $300 million “Greenline” project would see a pathway established along the river’s Northbank from Birrarung Marr all the way to the Bolte Bridge.

For a number of years I rode to work in the Melbourne CBD, along the Yarra, from Toorak. One thing that I quickly learnt was to use the south bank of the Yarra, and not the north bank. If you have tried riding the cycling path on the north bank you will know what I am talking about.

Half of the Greenline project (the two-kilometre Northbank stretch from Spencer St to the Bolte) will be in Docklands, which at the moment is very undeveloped on the river, almost like a forgotten part of the larger Docklands project that got put on the backburner.

Its rare nowdays to see the creation of new public open space, and so City of Melbourne should be congratulated for all their work so far and for pushing ahead with the project

Plans revealed a vision to better connect pedestrians and cyclists between a series of new parks, boardwalks and pedestrian bridges. It also sought to celebrate the river’s historical importance to Aboriginal culture and improve its overall health.

“Greenline will transform the Northbank from drab to a destination in its own right,” the Lord Mayor said.?“For generations our city has turned its back to the river and this project will transform how Melburnians move around and interact with the waterfront.” "Turning your back on the river" is not exclusive to Melbourne, other cities have done the same thing with their planning, the most obvious example is Brisbane, which built a freeway along the north bank of the Brisbane River, permanently severing the city from the river.

I have given my feedback into their initial design thinking, via their HYS process. This is one to keep your eye on.
