Greenbiz Bloom 23: What will you do differently?

As I reflect on my time at Greenbiz Bloom 23 last week, I feel deep respect for the organizing team for both the mindfully curated content, as well as the inviting space they created for beautiful community of speakers and participants. I loved meeting old friends and new and reconfirming our shared commitment to nature.

?

The LinkedIn ‘tradition’ of going to conferences and events seems to now include posting takeaways. The more conferences I attend, the more I see others posting amazing takeaways.

?

What I increasingly wonder is: how can I maximize the number of people who speed up, scale up, broaden their actions or pivot based on learnings from conferences? So, for the foreseeable future, my post-conference notes will focus on actions I hope to see as an outcome of the conference.

Nature and Biodiversity need to be part of every company’s ESG strategy:

  • All companies need a nature strategy including biodiversity. If your company has annual revenue of at least 40 million Euros in the EU, you will also need this as part of your EU CSRD requirement.
  • Nature strategies need to be integrated into a holistic Environmental, Social and Governance frameworks rather than being seen as an add-on.
  • Indigenous people need to be involved, not just informed, at the heart and center of nature strategies and programs. Indeed, I think this is a critical due diligence question for business and ESG leaders in choosing their program partnerships.

?

We need to walk back from the precipice of multiple frameworks and hyper-specialists all advocating for their own topic:

?

  • There are too many disparate frameworks. They are all good but also all overwhelming unless you have a team of people inside the company or a team of consultants. Framework creators need a conference of their own to consolidate. We will not want history saying we spent as much time and money measuring and reporting as we did on acting.
  • I meet more and more hyper-specialists from companies at these conferences. It’s great to have deep expertise on subject matters and to meet the increasing demands for perfection in measurement. That said, I see that these hyper-specialists are often not connected to the bigger picture, and sometimes reinventing the wheel on program design. So, dear hyper-specialists. – please look up, look around, and work with the big picture.
  • There is still a disconnect between what all the frameworks, experts, NGOs expect companies to do and what small and medium cap companies can do. More than once I heard ‘your water person needs to talk to your biodiversity person.’ Many large companies have such teams. Small to medium size companies do not. Their teams are between 1-5 people, and they do not have the bandwidth to read 65-page manuals on every topic. The frameworks and stakeholders need to find a way to help small and medium companies build holistic programs across E, S and G.

Regenerative Leadership’s time has come:

?During the Regenerative Leadership workshop I ran at the conference, and in countless conversations I had before, during and after the workshop, one thing became clear: we still have far too many amazing leaders whose inner light, ideas and energy are critical to solving the world’s existential challenges but are holding back or held back from the most powerful versions of themselves.

I am even more deeply committed to helping leaders remember and recenter themselves on regenerative leadership because I know that regenerative leaders will accelerate a regenerative world.

?

Please get in touch if you would like to have a conversation about any of the above. I would love to help you move forward with impactful action on building nature strategy and regenerative leadership.
