Green Walls Work For Homes Too!

WHO KNEW?

After years of natural engineering on vertical landscapes of corporate structures, we were entrusted with a private residence project. This living and breathing artwork resides on the wall of a custom home. At two stories high (22 feet), it is visible from everywhere in the house.

We didn’t want our design to be just a cover on a blank wall. Rather, we wanted to create a dramatic effect of vibrancy and tranquility with a design that met the homeowner’s expectations.

To achieve this, we spent time observing their lifestyles. We also took into account factors like the house’s location, the intensity of sunlight, existing reflective light, the heat given off from the hardscape surfaces, etc. And, of course, we were careful to select only those plants that would thrive in the microclimate of the environment.?

The indigo salvia plants went on top to attract butterflies and various pollinators. Also known as sage, this aromatic and hardy bloom also fills the air with a sweet minty fragrance. When placed towards the top of a vertical landscape, its tubular flowers create the illusion of a backdrop reaching up to the skies.?

FARFUGIUM

The farfugium with its large shiny leaves were placed at the bottom to create the feel of a verdant expanse. This hardy perennial boasts vibrant textures that contrast and complement its neighbors. Plus, as an evergreen, it stays emerald all year round, offering cheery yellow flowers from autumn until winter. The leaves’ solid color and structure provide a stable base to the upward undulating design.

Speaking of design, we created a pattern that resembles a giant cactus in an oasis. We used deep greens in the middle and on either side, all medium and tall variations planted vertically on gracefully swaying shapes. Then, we interspersed short yellows and light greens between them.

The play in colors and sizes helped us delineate each plant’s territory, and positioning low plants in the middle of higher ones created the impression of a textured terrain.

What’s a garden without flowers, right? We, therefore, added colorful blooms interspersed throughout the canvas. We used violets, lilacs, purples, and whites to break the monotony of greens and to inject a meadow-like character into the scenery.

The result was the transformation of a hereto contemporary brick, stone, and wood dominated space into a green oasis - a project our team is extremely proud of. It gives us immense fulfillment when we succeed at marrying functionality with beauty. In this case, the vertical wall serves as a beautiful backdrop in place of a plain wall while also purifying the air.

We apply sustainable technology to all our installations. This living art wall is low (potentially zero) maintenance, thanks to a highly efficient water pipe system included within the structure. We monitor the pH and salt levels in the tank and adjust them as appropriate.

Each plant is also strategically positioned in the Aquafelt layers according to the sunlight needed to stay evergreen. The fabric replaces soil, allowing roots to grow their own ecosystem along the wall. The result is nature cleverly incorporated into an urban environment.

What our clients like most about green wall art are the variations in color, texture, and volume of the plants. Please feel free to?visit our website?to understand our work better. We’ve designed and installed numerous green walls across North America. We believe the greener the setting, the more the relief.??
