The green transition: Germany lagging and the US battling

Falling behind

Germany, once an economic growth engine, has now become a laggard, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predictions. The country's growth is expected to be slower than that of the US, UK, France, and Spain in the next five years.

Germany faces multiple challenges - one of them is the failure to create a successful energy transition. The move away from nuclear power and issues with transitioning to renewable energy have affected competitiveness. The current government struggles to sufficiently invest in emerging sectors and to adapt Germany's economic model "to thrive in a more fragmented, greener and ageing world", writes the Economist.

War against ESG

BlackRock's attempts to push ESG topics in corporate boardrooms is facing challenges, as public resistance to it grows. "For the first time, the world's largest asset management fund voted down the majority of ESG proposals for the 2022–23 proxy season", writes The Epoch Times. Liberal-leaning US pension fund leaders and politicians are cautioning against reversing their commitment to ESG causes, criticising BlackRock for leading a "misinformed and shortsighted war against ESG", states the Financial Times.

The support for ESG resolutions dropped to 7% this year from 47% in 2021 and 22% in 2022, summarises Nawar Alsaadi. Similarly, the CEO company letters are shifting away from the ESG terminology:

Besides the BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, its former chief investment officer for sustainable investing Tariq Fancy also actively engages in the public ESG debate. Mr Fancy was questioned about the root causes of significant ESG issues, such as greenwashing. He suggested that these problems might arise from professionals lacking proper qualifications and struggling to effectively communicate the associated risks and opportunities, states Financial News . For a more elaborate read, delve into his four-part essay discussing a shift in his perspective on 'sustainable investing'.

At the same time, Financial Times article reports that a growing number of blue-chip US companies are using ESG - environmental and social factors - to decide bonuses for top executives. Investors now are worried the metrics are being gamed to increase payouts. Three-quarters of S&P 500 companies have disclosed that environmental, social and governance metrics contributed to executives’ pay, up from two-thirds of companies in 2021, according to data from The Conference Board and ESGAUGE - ESG Intelligence & Analytics , an ESG data analytics firm.

The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The Atlantic has one of the best articles on the potential implications of the use of AI models for the future of humanity: "Does Sam Altman know what he's creating?". It explores the rise of ChatGPT and the work of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI . The article combines informative insight with thought provoking questions about how AI might affect white collar jobs and society at large within the next decade, and what it might mean for social cohesion and economic wellbeing. AI will change everything, but currently there is no global coordination or oversight mechanism to avoid unintended and potentially catastrophic consequences of its use.
