With protectionism on the rise and tariff threats looming, Dr. Ma Jun advocates for a Green Free Trade Agreement in Asia to counter this trend, as outlined in Project Syndicate. Developing domestic green industries is essential for climate action, job creation, and economic growth.
However, open markets are crucial to scaling clean technologies, reducing costs, and accelerating the global green transition. Leveraging existing trade pacts like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) could fast-track progress.
A green trade framework could also incentivize foreign direct investment (FDI), enabling cross-border collaboration. For instance, Chinese, Japanese, and South Korean firms in EVs and solar panels could license technologies to ASEAN manufacturers, strengthening regional green supply chains. Economic competitiveness and climate action must go hand in hand.

By fostering expertise, markets can better navigate trade complexities, accelerate the low-carbon transition, and seize new economic opportunities.
CASI Academy is a new platform for delivering high-quality, accessible education on sustainable finance, focusing on emerging markets. Using digital technologies, it provides localized learning resources in multiple languages. By 2026, it aims to offer 100 hours of content on sustainable investment.
The Academy covers essential topics, including green finance taxonomy, climate risk management, ESG investing, and transition finance. Currently, introductory courses are available in four languages, supporting learners worldwide. Aligned with the G20 Technical Assistance Action Plan (TAAP) 2023, it ensures practical, relevant knowledge for professionals in developing countries.
