REPORT BY: Climate Rights International Report
Forced Evictions, Sexual Violence, Oil and Chemical Dumping, and Violence in $15 Billion Kingfisher Project Operated and Co-Owned by CNOOC, Majority-Owned by TotalEnergies.
While the Ugandan government has claimed that Kingfisher and related projects will benefit the people of Uganda, those living in and around the planned development tell a different story. Many have been forcibly evicted without compensation, coerced into selling their land at inadequate prices, and deprived of their livelihoods, leaving them struggling to feed their children or pay for education.
Many local residents report threats, intimidation, and violence, including sexual violence. Workers complain about safety problems and demands for bribes to obtain jobs from CNOOC and its subcontractors. Climate Rights International also received reports from whistleblowers of illegal dumping and spills of oil and chemicals that have killed fish and polluted Lake Albert. FULL DETAILS! ?

Earlier this week, CEO Summit Uganda and partners officially launched, the 15th Annual CEO Forum themed “Only One Earth: Our Purpose and Mandate,” emphasizing the urgent need for a unified approach to combat climate change and promote sustainability across various industries.
Stephen Mukasa, Team Leader of CEO Summit Uganda , underscored the importance of combining efforts to draft a verified strategy to combat environmental change, asserting that such collaboration will significantly impact the corporate space. “ESG is a valuable asset that reflects the positive social impact organizations have on the environment and their communities,” he stated.
Shafik Nekambuza, Head of Brands and Sustainability at Next Media , re-echoed this sentiment, declaring, “ESG is a collective effort for all of us, both individually and within our organizations, because we all share the Earth.” He also added that ESG is mandatory for all of us, regardless of the company or industry we're in, citing efforts like the 15 million tree planting campaign and more, spearheaded by his organization.
Lawrence Mutumba, Investment Manager for Financial Services Development at Agricultural Business Initiative (aBi), added, “We focus on providing green and sustainable financing to farmers, and we are glad to be part of the Annual CEO Forum.”
The launch event set the stage for the forum, which is slated to take place on September 13, 2024, at Mestil Hotel.
As the world grapples with pressing environmental issues, this forum aims to facilitate an ongoing dialogue among corporate leaders on effective strategies to address global challenges.

Uganda is one of the highest consumers of textiles per person in the world. Each Ugandan consumes an average of more than 27 kilograms of new clothing per year and disposes of an average of 23 kilograms of clothing to landfill each year, or 93 percent of the textile waste we generate.
Ugandans dump more than 15 tons of clothing and fabric waste into landfills every 10 minutes or export it overseas.
The root cause of this waste is “fast fashion”—cheap, stylish, mass-produced clothes that greatly impact the environment.
These garments appeal to shoppers because they are affordable and trendy. But because they aren’t built to last and quickly go out of style, they are quickly discarded, piling up in landfills like in Kitezi. READ FULL ARTICLE!
