Stakeholders during the NaCORI Decade Celebration

August 8, 2024 marked a significant milestone for the National Coffee Research Institute Uganda (NaCORI) as it celebrates its 10th anniversary. Established in 2014 following the enactment of the National Coffee Policy, 2013, NaCORI has been at the forefront of generating, developing, and disseminating technologies, methods, and knowledge to enhance the productivity and quality of coffee and cocoa in Uganda.

Over the past decade, NaCORI has made remarkable strides in empowering young coffee farmers through research, training, and innovation, driving Uganda's coffee and sector forward. Key achievements include submitting 5 candidate Arabica coffee varieties to MAAIF for assessment, building the capacity of over 500 coffee nursery operators to multiply disease-resistant clones, establishing a coffee gene bank, producing farmer information materials on best practices, constructing research laboratories, and developing integrated pest and disease management packages.

The anniversary celebration was attended by stakeholders from the coffee and cocoa value chains, including government officials, researchers, and representatives from the private sector. They all commended NaCORI's contributions and expressed optimism for the institute's continued success in driving Uganda's sustainable agricultural transformation.

GeoPoll ~ UN Environment Programme (UNEP) now considers climate change an emergency in East Africa, given the significant impact it has already had on the region. Unfortunately, private sector investment in climate change adaptation has been insufficient. According to the Climate Policy Initiative, private investment in Ethiopia only covered 0.56% of the country’s climate finance needs in 2018, and in Kenya, only 4% of the needs were covered. The lack of private investment in Uganda has also been concerning. READ REPORT!
