I remembered being introduced to green smoothies back in 2009. I always got fruit smoothies in the mall and sometimes added greens in it. But the concept of green smoothies was new. I watched my friends prepare it and make some adjustments for me. I tasted it and wasn’t impressed. But I drank it to be polite and washed it down with some water. Maybe an hour later, I was feeling great. I had a burst of energy. This grass drink provided so many benefits, what did I do?
I implemented them into my diet ever since, and now I try to have one every day. We all know all the 2-3 o’clock slump. According to science, your circadian rhythm, also known as your sleep/wake cycle, is a 24-hour internal clock that is running in the background of your brain and cycles between sleepiness and alertness at regular intervals.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, “for most adults, the biggest dip in energy happens in the middle of the night (somewhere between 2:00 am and 4:00 am when they’re usually fast asleep) and just after lunchtime (around 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, when they tend to crave a post-lunch nap).”
In my office, there was a huge problem with the slump. It was high energy mid-afternoon, then all of a sudden, the energy would drop although the customers persisted. I noticed mine and counter it with two things—green smoothies and taking a late lunch. My ideal lunch break was 2 pm because I want to have dinner by 6 pm.
But a simple remedy to help with it all is to take frequent breaks to get up stretch, walk around, and socialize. Remember, science says that as humans, we can hold attention and focus for 25 minutes. Then, we should take a 5 minutes break. If you have much work to do, work for 50 minutes and then take a 10 minutes break.
I make my green smoothies once a month and put them in mason jars that I store in my freezer. I use a regular Oyster blender. Here is a simple version of green smoothies. Remember, green smoothies aren’t for taste. You kind of get used to it after a while, and your body will yearn for it.
Simple Green Smoothie Receipt: Thoroughly Blend ingredients
- 2 cups of water (add more water as you go along to your desired thickness)
- 2 cups raw Spinach
- 2 cups raw Kale
- 1 cup of spring mix
- 2 apples (Cut apples of the core. My favorite combo is pink ladies and red delicious.)
- 1 Banana (peeled)
I am not a doctor or dietitian. These ingredients are what I used, but everyone’s bodies are different. Try one ingredient at a time at your own risk. Allergies are real. About the picture, I wouldn’t mix that acidic orange with your green smoothie. Eat the orange an hour before or after the smoothie. If you try this recipe, please let me know by sharing your pictures and videos below.
