Green Producers Club Joins Forces with Icelandic Film Centre to Drive Sustainable Filmmaking!

This week marked the launch of the Icelandic branch of the Green Producers Club, initiating a sector-wide turn towards fostering a climate-friendly cultural sector in Iceland. An important first step in the work of GPC Iceland is entering a strategic partnership with the Icelandic Film Centre .

The partnership entails a pilot project aimed at mapping and reducing the carbon footprint associated with productions supported by the Icelandic Film Centre. In practice, this means that production companies can receive support from the Icelandic Film Centre equivalent to the Green Producers Club membership fee for one year. Read more about this here.?

Gísli Sn?r Erlingsson, director of the Icelandic Film Centre, and Mads Astrup R?nning, founder of GPC.

Gisli Snaer , Director of the Icelandic Film Centre, underscores the institution's commitment to environmentally conscious filmmaking, stating, “Green Filming is a major concern for the Icelandic Film Centre. Within recent years, Green Production has established itself consistently and is now an important aspect of funding concepts (in Iceland and abroad). Our collaboration with Green Producers Club is a great step to explore the readiness of our industry to implement changes and make their productions more sustainable, from the planning phase to the actual production.”

Mads Astrup R?nning , founder of GPC, also expresses enthusiasm for the partnership: "We're thrilled to collaborate with the Icelandic Film Centre. Through this initiative, the Film Centre has transformed its climate and environmental strategy into actionable measures, and is supporting production companies across the country to adopt green practices and assess their carbon footprint. It is remarkable to see such an impactful measure originate from the top of the production value chain. The Centre's pilot project thus sets a shining example, and we believe it will lead the way for more eco-friendly practices in Iceland's production industry."

Embracing the adage "Think Globally - Act Locally," the partnership highlights the importance of addressing the global issue of climate change while recognizing and tackling the specific environmental challenges encountered at the local level in Iceland.

Grounded in research, the Green Producers Tool tailors its approach to the Nordic context, incorporating insights such as Iceland's advantageous green energy mix. The Tool is continuously under development, informed by technological advancements and local feedback. This ensures its ongoing relevance and efficacy, and sets it apart from generic international benchmarks and reporting schemes.

By fostering active engagement and localized adaptation, the collaboration between the Green Producers Club and the Icelandic Film Centre exemplifies a proactive stance towards sustainable filmmaking, setting a precedent for the wider industry to follow suit.
