Green Line project update

Green Line project update

Update on Green Line's Development Phase

The Development Phase is progressing on schedule as we advance design and negotiate the project cost, schedule, and risk allocation. While the specific details of the negotiations are confidential, the Green Line Board and project leadership team remain committed to updating Calgarians, City Council and our funding partners as we progress through the Development Phase.?On October 11, we presented an update to City Council and an overview is available on our website: Green Line | Development Phase.

Additional due diligence underway along the Green Line

Ground sample testing

As we continue to get closer to main construction of tracks, stations, tunnels, and bridges, our Development Partner, BTC, is undertaking additional due diligence work to test ground conditions through a series of geotechnical and environmental borehole drilling exercises. Starting October 12, they will be testing ground samples along the alignment to determine the soil conditions, confirm water permeability, test for contaminants and more.

More than 672 boreholes and test pits have been drilled since 2014, but we continue to gather data and information about the ground that we will build on and tunnel through. This helps us reduce project risks, design the best structures for the conditions, and better estimate costs.

Q&A with Sharon Fleming, Calgary Transit Director

The Green Line plays a big role in Calgary Transit's long-term plans. We asked citizens to submit their questions about the Green Line and future transit plans, and the Director of Calgary Transit answered.

Update on construction of 78th Avenue Project in Ogden

Embankment construction in Ogden

Since July 2023, we’ve been busy in Ogden with an Early Works project to prepare for main Green Line construction. This fall, construction efforts are focused on building embankments for rail diversion tracks. But what exactly is that, and why is it needed?

The Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) railway runs along the east side of Ogden, and the Green Line LRT will run along that same corridor. Before building the Ogden LRT station and tracks, the 78th Avenue Project will complete vehicle and pedestrian tunnels under the CPKC railway corridor to enhance mobility and pedestrian safety around the future Ogden LRT Station.

Construction work under an active railway line is challenging so we are building embankments for temporary tracks (diversion tracks). Once the trains are diverted, we can begin construction work on the original embankments safely and without disruption to the schedule of CPKC trains.?Following completion of the 78 Avenue tunnel, the CPKC trains will be moved back to their original track.

With?approximately 26 trains?per day operating on CPKC’s main line, this complex project will reduce overall project and schedule risk. Once the tunnel at 78 Avenue S.E. is complete and open to traffic, the vehicle crossing at 69 Avenue S.E., east of Ogden Road, will be permanently closed.

More details about the location of the Green Line LRT tracks and the design of the station will be available next year, and we look forward to sharing that information with the residents of Ogden. ?

Manufacturing milestone met for Green Line trains

Car body shell prior to testing

The Green Line team has been working with CAF, our Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) provider, to advance the design and production of the new trains.?

After two years in the design process, the customized design for Green Line’s LRV recently achieved a significant milestone. In September 2023, the Final Design Review was submitted, bringing us one step closer to starting manufacturing.?

This milestone was reached ahead of schedule thanks to close collaboration between Green Line and the CAF design teams. CAF’s senior management praised this partnership, stating that “Green Line is the most collaborative team that we have worked with, and we wish all client organizations worked as collaboratively.”

Following manufacturing, the LRVs will be subject to 12-months of rigorous performance, functionality, safety, and cold-climate testing before they are delivered to Calgary.
