INSIGHTS & PERSPECTIVES
Torch Systems Introduces Low-Cost Comprehensive IoT and AI Solution for Early-Stage Outdoor Fire and Wildfire Detection | Via Business Wire / TechCrunch | March 15, 2023
New IoT and AI technology incorporates solar-powered sensors and a mobile app intended for a wide range of users affected by outdoor fires and wildfires, including homeowners, landowners and agriculture, hospitality, utility, and government organizations
Torch Systems , a solutions provider for early-stage outdoor fire detection, today [3/15] announced the launch of its low-cost comprehensive solution for early-stage outdoor fire and wildfire detection.
?? Torch Systems provides solar-powered sensors that continuously monitor an outdoor area for any signs of fire and a free mobile app that immediately notifies users about fires not only on their property but also in the surrounding areas and communities.
??Each Torch device provides up to 10 acres of coverage, and incorporates multiple sensors that measure visual, thermal and gas characteristics for the most comprehensive outdoor fire detection available.
“Torch cares deeply about democratizing outdoor fire detection and is committed to a comprehensive, affordable solution for the widest range of users, including consumer homeowners and landowners, agriculture, hospitality, and utility companies, and government organizations,” said Torch Systems CEO and co-founder Michael Buckwald .
“Torch is the first company to bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor fire detection. Mandatory indoor smoke detectors have dramatically reduced indoor fires in magnitude and quantity since the 1970s, but until now there hasn’t been a similar detection solution designed to combat outdoor fires, which have continued to grow at over 30% each year unabated.”
The detrimental environmental impact of outdoor fires
??In addition to destroying property and severely impacting or taking lives, outdoor fires are highly detrimental to our environment and climate.
??According to?estimates from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), global wildfires and vegetation fires in 2022 generated around 1.455 megatonnes (1.455 million metric tons) of carbon emissions.
??Furthermore, University of California and University of Chicago researchers?found?that California wildfires in 2020, the most disastrous California wildfire year on record, emitted twice as much greenhouse gas as the total reduction of greenhouse gas in California between 2003 and 2019.
??Climate change is the obvious culprit here, leading to droughts and higher temperatures that provide a perfect environment for devastating fires, especially in the western United States. As NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration ?recently noted:
"One study by scientists funded through NASA’s Earth Science Data Systems program, known as NASA EarthData, found near exponential growth in fire frequency and size in the western U.S. from 1950 to 2019. The average wildland fires of the 1950s were 1,200 acres (485 hectares), but by the 2010s the average had doubled to over 3,400 acres (1,376 hectares)."
State-of-the-art sensors continuously monitor an area for any signs of fire, whether or not the flame is in line of sight.
“One Torch sensor device has multiple infrared cameras, visible cameras, and gas sensors that continually monitor the environment and detect fires early, with high accuracy,” said Torch Systems COO and co-founder Vasya Tremsin .
“Torch sensors detect outdoor fires the size of a car – usually even smaller – outside the line of sight when placed every 10 acres on a property.”
??The on-board sensors are on the lookout for heat, light and smoke. When the data hits a specific threshold, an alert will be wirelessly sent to the owner’s connected device.
??Currently the on-board thermal camera is reserved for detection, but a future version could bring a live feed, either on device or through a connected camera (or, perhaps, drone).
??The limitations are due in part to power demands. The product is solar powered, and implementing too many features would be a drain on the battery.
??The devices communicate using radio signals, forming a kind of mesh network that allows you to add dozens or even hundreds of them to a single Wi-Fi gateway.
??Torch sensors require no maintenance and use solar power to charge a self-sufficient, rechargeable battery that can last for days.
??They are built to last at least five years and withstand all weather conditions. Torch sensors also don’t require specialized equipment to install; they can be mounted at human height to a tree, pole or building.
??Torch sensor devices continually measure multiple important variables, including:
??Verifying results through multiple variables minimizes false positives and ensures accuracy.
The Torch app allows unlimited users to monitor unlimited sensors and properties.
??The free-of-charge Torch app supports unlimited users, sensors and properties under one account and immediately sends fire alert notifications to unlimited designated users.
??The Torch app also includes community features whereby separate account owners can share data and alerts when a fire is detected on their property.
Torch provides disruptive technology and pricing.
??Traditional centralized solutions sit on a mountaintop and scan for visual cues of fire but often don’t detect fires until it’s too late.
??Traditional decentralized approaches fail to detect outdoor fires too frequently because they don’t incorporate the variety of thermal, visual, and gas sensors included in every Torch device.

How IoT Helps Environmental, Social and Governance [ESG] Goals | Via TechTarget | March 28, 2023
Organizations must address sustainability concerns as IoT device use grows. Cloud optimization, smart buildings and predictive maintenance can help meet ESG goals.
??Sustainability is an increasing priority for nearly every high-tech company, as well as many other organizations -- and it's no coincidence.
??Emerging technologies such as 5G, blockchain and AI are unlocking new use cases for the smart, connected devices that make up IoT.
??However, they're also causing a massive surge in energy consumption, water usage and carbon dioxide emissions as those devices become more powerful, as 埃森哲 has?reported:
??In response, high-tech companies are?rolling out sustainability programs?and designing products with environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals in mind.
??These initiatives were plain to see at recent tech events, with many high-tech companies demonstrating their dedication to developing more sustainable products and initiatives.
"...While IoT is designed for energy efficiency, the explosive growth of the number of IoT devices is also elevating the need for device manufacturers to further improve power efficiency..."
??One example is Universal Electronics Inc.'s 2022 release of sustainability-focused wireless connectivity products with integrated energy harvesting capabilities that can deliver up to 2.5 times more computing power, while using up to 80% less battery power than traditional Bluetooth smart system-on-a-chip technology.
Ways to implement sustainability into IoT
??Companies should consider how to best use IoT technologies to improve product sustainability and support more eco-friendly manufacturing. 埃森哲 has outlined the following three steps that high-tech companies can take to help achieve their ESG goals.
1. Optimize cloud resource use
2. Transition to energy-efficient smart buildings
江森自控 is one company that uses IoT and edge computing to monitor environmental controls and takes advantage of 5G and AI to minimize building pollution and improve supply chain management. Its 2022 acquisition of FogHorn Systems, Inc , a developer of edge AI software for industrial and commercial IoT uses, brings new opportunities for?creating smart and autonomous buildings.

3. Improve semiconductor design and processing
??Companies should adopt a?circular economy?model, where sustainability starts at the design stage instead of after the fact via recycling. High-tech manufacturers that design for refurbishment and longevity can save money, potentially create new revenue streams and?reduce their carbon footprints.
??Sustainability improvements are happening all around us and are incorporated into personal devices, smart electronics in our homes, cars, office buildings and the environment. It's time to act now and use sustainable offerings as a competitive advantage.
