Green Deal: CEO-Initiative
As the new President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen has set ambitious goals for Europe with the Green Deal, making the environment one of her most important concerns: by 2050, net emissions of greenhouse gases in the European Union are to be reduced to zero. The German EU Council Presidency will also make this issue a priority from 1 July 2020.
We see it as our task to play an active role in this. In an open letter to the EU Commission, Volkswagen has therefore committed itself to the Green Deal together with ten international companies with headquarters in Europe. We are convinced that only an environmentally compatible, sustainable orientation of our companies will create the basis for our economic success and future prosperity.
We were impressed by the courage with which the President of the Commission expressed her environmental policy course right from the beginning. It can also make a contribution within the framework of "Next Generation EU" to provide important impulses to stimulate the economy after the Corona crisis.
With our initiative we are pursuing a cross-sectoral approach. No company, no sector and no economy on its own can make the Green Deal a success. Emission-free cars are of no use without green electricity, and an energy turnaround only makes sense if it is thought out and implemented throughout Europe.
A clean environment is not a utopia. We and future generations need it. With the orientation of our companies and suitable projects, we will therefore actively support the goals of the Green Deal and prove that sustainable business is feasible.
