It's 2024, and it's time to try something new.
Over the holidays, I spent some time thinking about my business, and how I accomplish what I do.
One of the tools I use is a database I created, years ago, of ongoing news -- product announcements, articles, market leader interviews -- and the like.
Funny thing is, though I spend a couple of hours a week keeping it updated, I never share what I uncover.
So today, in an effort to help the industry, I'm kicking off an effort to share what I'm learning. This is the inaugural edition of the Eco-Friendly Data Center Gazette, a biweekly newsletter to help all of us in the industry stay abreast of what's happening. Whether it's:
I'll send it out to you.
I'll also send out a short blurb on a company that's new to me, flying under the radar, and deserves attention.
Today I'll cover news from sources including Elea Data Centers , DatacenterDynamics , the San Antonio Business Journal, CPS Energy, Digital Power Optimization, Inc. , Modine Manufacturing Company , TMGcore , Keppel (Infrastructure Division) , InformationWeek , and Ethernetics .
Hope this newsletter is a help, and I hope you'll subscribe and share it!
Brazil's Elea Data Centers is soliciting investment in their sustainable data center goals, and is signing up to financial penalties if they don't hit ESG goals, including maintaining energy efficiency, significantly reducing water consumption, and having female leadership in over 40% of managerial positions.

A Fairfax County, Virginia delegate in the state House of Delegates has proposed a bill that would mandate a PUE of 1.20 if data center operators want to be eligible for sales and use tax exemptions. The bill also would also require use of carbon free energy and would block use of diesel fuel for generators.
CPS Energy in San Antonio, Texas, states that data centers will increase energy consumption by 10x in ten years.
Digital Power Optimization, Inc. ("DPO") a developer and operator of green data centers announced a power purchase agreement with a major, multinational producer of renewable energy. DPO and the producer expect to deploy 100MW data center deployments across up to six of the Seller's Texas wind assets. Instead of using virtual PPAs or offsets, DPO will draw power behind the meter, directly from the renewable wind generation facilities.
Modine just purchased the cooling assets of TMGcore , a specialist in single and two-phase immersion cooling.
Keppel (Infrastructure Division) has filed to install multi-megawatt battery energy storage systems (BESS) at two data centers in Dublin, Ireland.
InformationWeek highlights innovative uses for data center heat, including farming and aquaculture, as recently demonstrated through projects in Europe and Asia.
To wrap up, today I had a good talk with Luc Bosseart of Ethernetics , a startup with an innovative, modular Smart PDU that's able to monitor and reduce energy consumption at the server level. In a month or two, Ethernetics will be releasing some exciting news about their ability to cut energy consumption for production workloads at a large European telecommunications company. Their tech looks like a cost-effective and quickly deployable way to shave down data center energy consumption.
Thanks everyone for reading. Hope you'll like and subscribe, and have a good weekend.

1 年Thanks Brian Whitaker for an inspirational conversation. And congrats with your newsletter. We share a keen interest into how to solve the Data Center Dilemma : how to combine the exponential demand for Digital services with the need to reduce the Environmental Footprint. I believe in the power of technology to solve this (or close the gap) and with Ethernetics I want to be part of the solution mix.
