5. Electric Excavator with lithium-ion battery:

Komatsu Ltd, plans to introduce the 13-ton class PC138E-11?electric excavator equipped with a lithium-ion battery to the domestic market as a rental machine in January 2024?or later. By equipping a high-capacity lithium-ion battery and integrating a cooling system for the battery and electric components for this new machine, Komatsu has achieved long operation time while reducing the rear-end swing radius.

Hydraulic excavators are the most versatile type of construction equipment, and the 13-ton class is used in a wide range of jobsites and applications, centering on relatively confined spaces, such as urban civil engineering. By capitalizing on the launch of this machine, Komatsu is set to develop a broad range of new customer needs and establish the market for electric construction equipment.

At Intermat 2024, Komatsu Europe will present the PC138E -11?excavator with a Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance kit, a simple and flexible technological enhancement now available for a broad range of Komatsu machines. The kit provides an accessible way to add 2D and 3D machine guidance and can be customized with various options that allow the kit to better accommodate each customer's machine configurations and operating conditions.

Main features:

(i) Environmental and Economic Performance - Achieving zero exhaust emissions with battery-powered and human- and work-environment-friendly features, The battery- powered system produces no exhaust gases, creating a clean working environment. It is friendly to workers and trees around the vehicle, and is widely used at a variety of jobsites, including indoor and urban construction sites.

(ii) Comfort and Security:

  • Long operation and compact body size achieved with large-capacity lithium -ion battery The machine is powered by a 225-kWh lithium-ion battery for long hours of operation. The combination of long hours of operation and a compact body size allows for operation in a wider range of construction sites.
  • Dynamically reducing machine and worksite noise thanks to silent electric motorBecause the power source is a motor, the machine does not generate engine noise. The operator can easily communicate with surrounding workers during the operation, enabling safe and accurate performance.
  • Comfortable work environment achieved with reduced body no machine vibration and reduction of reduced heat generated from the machineAs the machine is not equipped with an engine, the area around the machine does not get hot and vibration transmitted to the operator has been substantially reduced. The operator feels less stress and fatigue during work, performing comfortable work.

(iii) Safety, Reliability, and Serviceability - Body structure for safer and easier daily inspectionsAs routine checkups and high- voltage areas are completely separated, routine checkups can be safely conducted without worrying about high-voltage danger. Furthermore, routine checkups and periodic maintenance items have been substantially reduced because there are no checkup items related to the engine and fuel.

6. Hydrogen Fuel Cell-powered Mining Truck:

General Motors and Komatsu will co- develop a hydrogen fuel cell power module for Komatsu’s 930E electric drive mining truck, the world’s best-selling ultra-class haul truck. GM, a leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology, and Komatsu, a global manufacturer of mining and construction equipment, will jointly design and validate the technology.

Lightweight and quick to refuel, hydrogen fuel cells are ideal for electrifying applications traditionally powered by diesel engines. Hydrogen provides an effective method to package large quantities of energy onboard the vehicle, without compromising payload carrying capacity.Additionally, fuel cells provide an excellent zero tailpipe emissions solution for vehicles with extreme hauling requirements, like the Komatsu 930E mining truck, with its nominal payload of 320?tons. These vehicles typically operate at a single mine throughout their life, which simplifies the challenges of sizing and deploying an effective hydrogen refueling infrastructure to service the vehicle fleet.

Komatsu’s fuel cell-powered mining trucks will provide an additional pathway for decarbonization beyond battery-trolley or battery- static charging solutions, without the need for additional charging infrastructure within mines.

Komatsu has set a target of reducing its global emissions by 50% by 2030?and a challenge target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The plans for achieving these goals include reducing and eliminating emissions within the company’s product offerings, as well as in the company’s facilities and production of its products. Komatsu also works closely with its customers on reducing and eliminating emissions during product use through optimization programs supported by Komatsu technology and service solutions.

Conclusion:

The emergence and widespread adoption of green construction equipment underscore a transformative journey towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious construction industry. As technology continues to advance, these eco-friendly machines not only offer practical solutions to reduce carbon footprints and operating costs but also symbolize a commitment to fostering a greener future.

The construction sector's proactive embrace of innovative, energy-efficient machinery sets a positive example for other industries, encouraging a collective shift towards more sustainable practices.
