The Green Career Digest #1: Emerging Trends in Green Jobs for 2024

Welcome to the first edition of The Green Career Digest!

Two years back I started posting monthly a list of job openings in ESG and Sustainability across sectors and geographies. Beyond the positive reviews about the usefulness of the monthly digest, I got even thank you messages for people who found their dream job on the list.

Staying informed about the latest trends, skills, and opportunities in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and sustainability is essential for long-term career growth in this evolving field. This monthly newsletter is a resource for professionals looking to deepen their expertise, stay up-to-date on industry developments, and explore new ways to advance in their current roles.

Each issue will cover job opportunities across the sustainability landscape, along with career tips and insights into the skills that are becoming more relevant—such as ESG reporting, regulatory updates, and innovations in sustainable business. The focus is on helping you navigate the changing demands of the field and continue building on the knowledge and experience that drive your work forward.

Topic of the month: Emerging Trends in Green Jobs for 2024

As the focus on combating climate change intensifies, the demand for green jobs is rising rapidly in 2024. Key trends shaping the ESG and sustainability sectors include the increasing role of technology, particularly data analytics, which are enhancing ESG strategies and creating new roles in sustainability analytics and digital supply chain monitoring. Additionally, renewable energy remains a major driver of job growth, especially in offshore wind, generating opportunities for engineers, project managers, and environmental consultants.

Corporate responsibility is also evolving, with companies embedding ESG principles into their core operations, increasing demand for sustainability officers and CSR managers. Similarly, the rise of the circular economy is driving job creation in sustainable product design, recycling management, and circular supply chain logistics. Companies are focusing on resource efficiency and waste reduction, leading to new opportunities across various sectors.

While automation are becoming integral to sustainability efforts, they cannot replace the essential role of sustainability professionals. Decarbonisation requires strategic shifts across entire value chains, from sourcing to production, which AI alone cannot achieve.

In the coming editions I will cover the highlighted topics in more depth in effort to explain how they will impact ESG and sustainability professionals. If you are new to the ESG and sustainability field all together, have a read through the academy and the online courses.
