As a designer, Explaining and putting visual work into words is tricky. Moreover, Graphic design is not a thing that puts all design elements together and picks the best one. There are some design terms in here that you should know.

Why Should You Know These Terms?

Well, As a designer, We might struggle at some point in our design. It’s hard, I’ve been in this type of situation. I don’t have any idea of what to do next in my design.

Then I learn these terms, Then I realize I was totally on the wrong path of designing.

After learning these design terms, I’ve got to know the point of how to design in a proper way.

However, If you take any career, There are some basics that you should learn before starting. And I made that mistake, Without knowing the basics, I?start designing?like a noob.

What I did, was just put relative design elements together and select which ones look good.

At Some point in time, I realize I was on the totally wrong path. Then I decide to learn the basics. It helped me in my design process at ease. After learning these terms, I came to know the perfect way to design and how to use design elements in the right way.

5 Basic Design Terms

1/ Composition

In simple words, Composition means layouts. Now you understand what is composition. In-depth, Layouts are arrangements of visual elements to form a complete image.

With composition, You can use different?basic principles of graphic design?to form a functional layout.

In simple terms, Composition is a part where all separate design elements come together to form a whole design.

2/ Balance

Any design elements placed have a visual weight that may be affected by form, size, color, and texture.

For instance, Let’s split a page into two-part, Then place an image in the first part. So, The same amount of weight (Dimension) of the image is in the second part, It’ll perfectly balanced.

This is what balance means. So, In simple words, The first part of the design elements’ weight should be equal to the second part.

There are three types of balance:

Symmetrical?– A symmetrical design, formed along a vertical and/or horizontal axis, with the weight of the elements evenly distributed across both sides of the layout.

Asymmetrical?– The balance uses scale, contrast, and color to even out the flow of a layout. However, commonly found on websites where two sides of a webpage differ but contain similar elements.

Radial– The elements of a design placed on the layout in a circular pattern. This gives the viewer’s eyes a sense of movement and dynamism.

3/ Alignment

Alignment refers to the position of design elements in the layout. However, there is a way of placing design elements in a proper way in the layout. So, It may align left, right, centered, and justified.

Proper alignment is important for graphic design, Or else a design may collapse.

4/ Contrast

Contrast matters the most in graphic design when designs pop up in the audience’s mind. Whenever someone sees it, It’ll remain in the person’s head. It creates space and indicates the difference in elements used in your design.

Your background must be notably different from the color used in the elements so they work harmoniously and blend together and are easily readable.

Moreover, It’s Important how much contrast level you’re using in your design. It should be at the right level, Not below or exceeding.

5/ Negative Space

White space is important for every composition. Moreover, This doesn’t mean literal “negative space” – It means white space, like empty spaces.

In between content, between lines, and even between the outer margins. There’s no “one way” to use white space correctly, But it’s good to understand its purpose. Negative space makes people focus on the main content.

11 Color Terms

1/ CMYK

CMYK Stands for Cyan, Magenta, and yellow, and the key is black. These are the most basic colors that are used for prints. However, CMYK is not as much as vibrant as RGB. Because It works well in reflected light.

2/ RGB

We all know what RGB stands for, Red, Green, and Blue. RGB is mostly used on-screen (Digital) only. It’ll now work well in prints. These colors are so addictive. Moreover, By mixing these primary colors, we can come up with a wide range of colors.

3/ Greyscale

Grayscale is a monochromatic palette in graphic design that uses different shades of grey in an image. A single image will make up of up to 256 different grayscale combinations.

In simple words, the Colors between black & white are greyscaled.

4/ Saturation

Saturation refers to the intensity of colors. It’ll look so vibrant. For instance, Saturated images are brighter, more vibrant, and more punturier. And Desaturated images are dull and almost colorless which is not good.

5/ Hue, Tone, Tint, And Shade

Hue?the term used to describe pure color that has no tint or shade (added white or black). Any color on the color wheel, for example, is a hue (blue, yellow).

The tone?is a hue that has grey added to it. So, The tone will reduce the intensity of the color and cause it to become dull.

The tint?is a hue that has white added to it to lighten it and make it paler. So, The tint can range from a slightly lighter color to completely white, with no color at all.

Shade?is the addition of black to a color. Shade is the inverse of Tint—rather than lightening the color, it darkens it.

6/ Color Palette

A color palette is a collection of colors that are used for a specific project. Mostly a color palette typically reflects a brand and should choose to complement one another.

8 Must Known Design Files

1/ Gif

GIF stands for the graphic interchange format. Simply a short animation that displays only 256 colors which allows you to have small files making it perfect for the web. This file format supports animation and transparency.

2/ JPEG

JPEG is the most well-known raster file format. This format is used for everything from images in emails to photos and anything else you find online. JPEG is an abbreviation for Joint Photographic Experts Group.

JPEG, unlike PNG, does not have the ability to be transparent. It is appropriate for both web and print.

3/ PNG

If you want to keep some image quality when compressing it, PNG is the way to go.

PNG, which stands for Portable Network Graphics. Developed to improve the quality of GIFs.

4/ TIFF

Most commonly TIFF images layout and InDesign.

It stands for Tagged Image File Format, and it produces a higher quality image than the formats listed above.

5/ PSD

PSD, or Photoshop Document, is a document format used by Adobe Photoshop.

This version is a raster image file that has not been compressed. In simple words, This file contains all editable layers (Unflatten layers) which you can transfer to another pc or laptop to edit.

6/ AI

AI stands for Adobe illustrator. Before knowing this file format, You should know what is vector.

Vector graphics are constructed from small graphics such as points, lines, and curves. A vector’s shapes use a mathematical equation that allows the vector to be resized without sacrificing quality. Unlike raster images, vectors will not become blurry.

Back with AI file format, This format was developed by Adobe to represent single-page vector drawings in EPS and PDF.?

Moreover, Like PSD files, AI files remain in uncompressed layers. This file format is editable (Unflatten layers).

But you cannot use AI file format in Photoshop, Because It is specifically made for Adobe illustrator.

7/ EPS

EPS stands for Encapsulated PostScript and is a vector-based resizable format. They’re mostly used for logos because they can be scaled to fit any project.

8/ PDF

Adobe created the PDF format, which stands for Portable Document Format. Most commonly downloaded and viewed format on any computer.

Adobe Illustrator can embed PGF data (Illustrator’s native format) into a PDF so that it can be used as a vector format.
