GREC FESTIVAL IN BARCELONA

This year marks the 48th edition of the Grec Festival 2024, one of Europe’s leading festivals of the arts. Having already started on 26th June and lasting until 4th August, events will predominantly take place at the infamous 'Teatre Grec' along with fifty other of the city’s most exciting venues. Productions will include a range of both international performances and the very best of Barcelona’s local talent. Over the course of its history, this long-standing event has become a key summer attraction in Barcelona and here’s why…

?? GREC THEATRE

Shows will mainly take place at the impressive open-air ‘Teatre Grec‘ in Parc de Montju?c, a venue with a distinct Greek-inspired design, which only adds to the unique ambiance of the festival. Major classical works have been performed here, although due to the events of the Spanish Civil War it almost fell into disuse. In 1976, with the opening of the Grec Festival, it was given a new lease of life and since then, it comes alive each Summer to become the central venue of the city’s biggest performing arts festival.

???? THIS YEAR'S PROGRAMME

The festival highlights artists who have previously featured in the festival and have gone on to achieve international recognition, and also pays homage to renowned performers from around the world. This year however, the festival will turn its focus inward, with a special emphasis on artists who represent a new generation of Barcelona talent, accompanied by masters of their craft who have influenced up and comers and have a personal commitment to generations to come. You may also notice a strong female presence in the line-up, a highlight for those wanting to support women in the arts.

Diversity and inclusivity are at the forefront of this festival. You can expect to see a range of artistic works, from contemporary performances to classical theatre, often featuring experimental and innovative productions.

The mix of genres, different people and different cultures all help to make this festival very special. The variety really is endless and spectators will be spoilt for choice.

The theme of this year’s Festival is friendship – artists inviting other artists, people attending shows with their friends and it’s also the perfect setting for a romantic date. The Grec Festival has become a truly integral part of the city’s culture, bringing together artists and audiences to celebrate creativity, diversity and the performing arts.
