The greatest views of any job

When you’re hanging from ropes 20 storeys up above the best city in the world (I may be a little biased about…) it’s difficult not to admire the view.
As high-rise window cleaners, we spend much of our time on the outside of buildings a long way up in the air and this gives us a unique perspective on the world. Imagine wearing glasses all your life then having eye surgery or wearing contacts – the frame on your visual world (I mean the actual frame of your glasses) is all of a sudden gone and everything seems wider, clearer, more open. The difference between looking at London through a window on the 25th floor of your office building and being on the outside of it washing away the grit and grime of the city every single day is a very similar thing. No window frame, no restricted view, just full horizon to horizon vista – a panoramic view like you wouldn’t believe.
From classics like St Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben and Tower Bridge to the contemporary glory of 30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin), 20 Fenchurch, and The Leadenhall, we’ve often got the greatest view of any job.
The Leadenhall Building is a top 10 tallest building in London, all 52 floors of it, glazed all the way up to its 225m height. You can imagine why a high-rise window cleaner may dream of such a building. Not me of course, that might be going a little too far, but admire it, yes, of course.
If you get high enough on a building in centre of the City you can see all the way from Hyde Park to the outskirts of the capital – a distant green shows where the offices and restaurants stop and the suburbs begin.
We’ve cleaned the windows in many a commercial building in Soho, London. And from high up on the side of buildings there you can see the historic National Gallery, British Museum and Royal Academy of Arts. My personal favourite is looking across St James’s Park and Green Park, along the lakes and pathways that wind through the grassy areas to the Palace beyond. There’s something very London about all that.
Our view of the world is spectacular almost every day; it’s one of the reasons we love our work. Most people never get to experience what we experience, to see what we see, but you could.
Obviously, if you’re an exceptional high-rise window cleaner you could always apply to be a member of my team, but, if not, I’ve just found that there are a few companies offering abseiling in the capital. Check them out and you could see why as a high-rise window cleaner we have the greatest views of any job.
