Greater Manchester wins prestigious EU transport strategy award

Greater Manchester wins 7th SUMP EU Award on multi-modality

I’m absolutely delighted to announce that Greater Manchester was awarded a prestigious EU award in Brussels last night. The Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP) award is presented by a jury of Europe’s leading transport experts to cities that are demonstrating far-sighted and people-focused transport strategies.

This year’s theme was multimodality and EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc praised “Greater Manchester’s excellent spatial approach, ambitious mode-share targets and integration of new technology”. The strength of our entry rested on our track record of delivering high-quality sustainable transport infrastructure and services; and our integrated approach to strategic planning.

Our over-arching plan is set out in our Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040 (www.tfgm.com/2040). It has been developed in an integrated way with the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework and details our long-term approach to delivering a world-class transport system which supports rapid population and jobs growth. Our goal is for 50% of all journeys will be made on foot, bike or public transport by 2040. This will mean less congestion and air pollution, a boost for our health, and more attractive towns and neighbourhoods. To support the 2040 Transport Strategy, we are publishing a series of five-year Delivery Plans.

This award is a fantastic recognition of the strength of Greater Manchester’s transport strategy and the hard work and dedication of TfGM and District colleagues in preparing our strategic plans. We are now responsible for delivering these projects and policies in an integrated way for the benefit of people across the city-region.

It was a great event, having so many likeminded positive people in one place is fantastic. Giving us chance to recharged our batteries, catch up with old friends and make new connections ??????
