A Great Year for the Caddie Program at Maketewah CC

CINCINNATI, OH – Head Golf Professional, Dave Bahr, Writes on the Benefits of the Maketewah Caddie Program

Early in my golf career as I worked towards my PGA membership and my first Head Professional position, it was instilled in me that great clubs have great caddie programs. Why is that? I think it goes to the core of the club and what it means to give back to the game and our communities. The benefits of having a great caddie program are many. Below are what I deem to be the most important ones I have observed in my 30 years in the golf business.

1. Employment – A Caddie Program provides young men and women an opportunity to start earning money at a relatively young age as an independent contractor similar to cutting grass or shoveling snow. Many caddies start caddying in middle school to begin their journey in the work force of America.??
2. Initiative – Most of these young men and women are showing the initiative to get out of bed early on the weekend and be productive while many of their counterparts are sleeping until late in the morning. By fostering this initiative, we are developing the leaders of tomorrow that are not afraid to rollup their sleeves and work hard.
3. Work Ethic – Nothing instills a great work ethic like caddying on a 95-degree day in late July. I would argue that any young person who is able to caddie can develop the work ethic to be successful in college and beyond.
4. Adult Interaction – The ability to interact with adults, especially those who are successful in their chosen fields is a unique opportunity that benefits both the member and the caddie. These mentorships oftentimes turn into lifelong friendships.
5. Evans Scholarship – The opportunity to receive a full ride to college is life changing and another unique opportunity of being a Caddie. To see many kids be the first person in their family to attend college is extremely gratifying.

I would like to personally thank our Members for supporting our Caddie Program at Maketewah. There is no better way to have a direct impact on young adults and give back to our communities in the process. You are literally changing peoples lives.
