A fresh debate around work-life balance has taken center stage following a controversial remark by S.N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman of Larsen & Toubro (L&T). In a recently viral video, Subramanian suggested employees should work 90 hours a week, raising eyebrows and sparking outrage. His statement has reopened the age-old discussion about long workweeks versus employee well-being.
S.N. Subrahmanyan said: "What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife? How long can wives stare at their husbands? Go to the office and start working".
"Honestly, I am sorry that I am not able to make you work on Sundays. I will be happier if I can make you work on Sundays because I work on Sundays too," said the L&T Chairman.
?? Before S.N. Subrahmanyan What Other Industry Leaders Are Saying
Narayana Murthy, (Co-Founder) of Infosys
Murthy has consistently pushed for increased work hours, believing it’s necessary for India to remain competitive. His controversial call for a 70-hour workweek reflects his belief that hard work is the only way to match countries like China and Japan. According to him, “Success demands dedication, and that means longer hours.”
Anupam Mittal, (CEO) of Shaadi.com
Mittal echoes similar views, emphasizing that extraordinary success requires extraordinary effort. In a podcast, he stated:
“Extraordinary success requires extraordinary effort. This generation needs to stop believing the lie about easy work-life balance.”

?? The Other Side of the Debate: Namita Thapar Speaks Out
On the other end of the spectrum, Namita Thapar, Executive Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals, highlights the dangers of overwork. She firmly believes in setting boundaries to protect mental and physical health.
“While leaders might push themselves to the limit, it’s unfair to impose the same on employees who don’t share the same financial upside. Long hours can cause irreversible damage to health and family life.”
Thapar reminds us that sustainable success comes from nurturing well-balanced, healthy employees rather than overburdening them.

2 个月As someone deeply involved in the tech industry, I’ve seen both sides of the argument. While long workweeks can occasionally be necessary for achieving specific goals or launching critical projects, they shouldn’t become the norm. A sustainable work-life balance is crucial not only for employee well-being but also for fostering creativity and productivity in the long term. The key lies in creating a culture that values efficiency and purpose-driven work, not just hours clocked in. It's time we redefine success beyond the hustle and embrace a more balanced approach to work.
