Great Ways to Help Others Around the Holidays

For many people, the holiday season is one of the happiest times of the year. This year, in particular, feels even sweeter as COVID-19 wanes and we’re able to come together with family and friends to celebrate in a safer way.?

That said,? while the streets may be filled with holiday magic, the pandemic has left many houses filled with gloom and worry. Some have been affected by poverty, while others are spending their first holiday season without loved ones, and many need an extra helping hand to get by this year.

With that in mind, here are a few ways to give back to others during the holiday season, especially in the Tulsa area.?

Adopt a Family

Hosted by Family and Children Services, Adopt a Family consists of adopting a family in their system and providing them with clothing, toys, books, and other household items. Sign-ups are available until November 19th, 2021, and can be done on the FCS Oklahoma website.?

Comfort Item Drive

The Comfort Item Drive is hosted by the Child Abuse Network and is accepting sign-ups until February 28th, 2022, so it extends beyond the new year. They are looking for new blankets and stuffed animals, anything that could help provide comfort for all the children they see monthly. The Salvation Army

This organization has been helping families in need for decades, and they always make an extra push during the holidays . From helping the youth by providing tutoring and educational programs, as well as character development and organizing positive recreational activities for them. The Salvation Army also helps families in need by providing shelter or transitional housing, job readiness, and emergency financial assistance for individuals and families. So how can we help them help others??

Red Kettle Bell Ringing

The most iconic way to give back with the Salvation Army, red kettle bell ringing gives you a chance to help raise money to go to those who need it. Available for sign-ups until December 13th, 2021. Grab a group of friends, family, or co-workers and go ring the red bell and collect donations. Or, set up a virtual kettle and challenge different groups to see who can get the most donations.?

Angel Tree donations?

Another offering from the Salvation Army, Angel Tree donation sign-ups are available until December 13th, 2021. This program provides assistance for low-income families with children under twelve years of age. There are many ways to get involved in this such as organizing toy drives or sorting and organizing the donations. The Salvation Army also has provided an online wishlist for those that still wish to help but would rather do it from home.

Donate Clothing to Unhoused Individuals

The Tulsa Day Center will be collecting clothing for unhoused individuals until December 31st, 2021. They are looking for new or gently used items for all ages and genders that will ensure their clients are safe and warm throughout this holiday season. Donations may be delivered during business hours to their 415 W Archer location.?
