GReaT Strides towards a Green Future

As World Environment Day approaches, it brings to the fore the needs of our planet and what we can do as individuals and organizations to meet the challenges that face us today.

The theme chosen for this year is Only One Earth, to drive home the fact that we are at a precarious stage in human history; where inaction today could have grave consequences in the future.

As a brand, we believe it falls to us to answer the clarion call and step-up to do our bit to reverse and mitigate the effects of climate change in any capacity possible.

World over, the ravages of climate change have intensified in the last 10 years, and India has not been spared. Our Eastern and Western Coasts have bourn the brunt of climate related natural disasters such as floods, and cyclones, and landslides in the more central regions. This has led to loss of life and economic losses that could largely have been avoided.

Taking cognizance of this, we have devised certain standards to ensure that we reduce our own carbon footprint, while increasing our contribution in the global effort to improve climate change outcomes.

Much of our power (70%) is drawn from renewable resources such as Solar and Wind generated power. In fact, we are largely reliant on our own solar powered grid to reduce our dependence on non-renewable energy sources.

As per the latest report on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, it is necessary that we conserve water resources by reusing and recycling water as much as possible to avoid unnecessary waste. We do so by reusing the hotels’ water resources across different departments, but most specifically in the maintenance of our plants and gardens, bringing aesthetic value while engaging in natural means of carbon dioxide reduction as well.

In terms of energy efficiency, we have harnessed the power of technology and innovations such as Internet of Things in our building management services to reduce wastage of power which translates directly to conserving electricity.

In the coastal areas around our hotels that are prone to flooding, we have used state-of-the-art technology to mitigate flood damage by placing barriers to the onslaught of water incursions to neighboring areas, protecting the homes of those residing there. Additionally, our focus as a brand is also directed to protecting our coastlines, and the creatures we share them with. To this effect, we have staff members that are trained in the handling and care of the eggs of Olive Ridley Turtles, who aid in the Save The Turtle Program.

As the theme of this year’s World Environment Day suggests, we have Only One Planet, and it is hence incumbent on us to protect it to the best of our ability.?
