The Great Resignation - What Is It & What Does It Mean To You As A Business Leader?

The Great Resignation Trend

I’m sure by now, you’ve heard of the term “The Great Resignation”.

There is a pattern emerging that employees are now more inclined to leave their current employment if they aren’t satisfied.

To give you an indication of this trend - In August alone, 4.3 million people in the US left their jobs according to the Job Openings and Labour Turnover Survey and Microsoft research indicated that approximately 40 per cent of the workplace globally is considering leaving their current employment this year.

This means that the pool of talented staff is more mobile and more inclined to move on from their current employment.

What Does This Mean For Employers?

In essence, this means that employers need to rethink their work conditions and what would be needed for their staff to want to stay.

I encourage you to ask yourself:

  • What would be the cost to my business of losing my staff who are skilled and understand my business?
  • What would be the disruption to my business (immediate and longer term) if a considerable proportion of my staff resigned in the next year?
  • Are my staff likely to resign in the near and medium-term future?
  • Do I know what my staff need and are looking for in their employment?
  • Am I providing the best conditions for engaging great staff?
  • What can I do differently to retain my most valuable staff?

Our staff know their value, and it’s more important now for you to appreciate their value and to work in conjunction with our employees for mutual benefit and to create a great culture that they want to be a part of.

Investing in workplace culture is no longer an expense that can be delayed or deprioritised. It is now an essential of effective operation!

Thanks Jodi Woelkerling as we discussed on The Today's Leader Podcast there are many unforeseen issues coming to light as we head out of the pandemic, and one of these is this great resignation shift. I believe part of this revolves around the increasing impacts on our lives by outside forces like govts and companies, and that people are wanting to seize some of that back and make a shift for themselves. The deal here foe companies is the more they attempt coercion or persuasion, they more likely they may face a rebellion. People are embracing alternative means of employment a d leaders and businesses must remain flexible in their approach.

The cost to the business by far exceeds the cost to replace those employees. People are assets, not expenses. Nice piece Jodi!
