The Great Resignation

Something Silly

Wouldn’t it be great to have a 6 months’ vacation twice a year?

Something Serious

During the height of the pandemic, workers lucky enough to have employment showed an incredible willingness to adapt to conditions changing at warp speed. Today’s workers continue to show the same incredible willingness, but this time it is to resign.?

A record 4.3 million people quit their jobs in August, up 242,000 more than in July. - U.S. Department of Labor.

As more people headed for the exit, the remaining workforce strained to meet the demands. According to the Society of Human Resource Management (polled 1150 employed U.S. adults in July):

  • 52% of those who chose to stay at their jobs said they’ve taken on more responsibilities?
  • 30% report struggled to meet the demand
  • 27% feel less loyalty to their organization
  • 55% now question whether their pay is high enough?

The data is clear; according to PricewaterhouseCoopers survey, nearly two-thirds of workers are on the hunt for a new job --and they are finding them. Massive job openings give workers an advantage to look for opportunities for better pay, health benefits, flexibility, and updated technology.

This isn’t a trend. This is the future.?

I can see the toll of more responsibility and harder to achieve success on many faces. As a trend, the answer may not be moving to a new organization (trends exists everywhere, right?), it may be rethinking an approach to drive innovation and build community and connection. Joshua Miller, insightful article and certainly words to consider as we face additional tumultuous times! I would encourage people not to just follow the crowd to quit! I would encourage companies not to see this as a passing fad! This is evidence of the "Perfect Storm" in the workforce that is coming when the disconnected education system storm, the disconnected management system storm and the inflexibility storm all collide!!!

The other side of this coin - which is having a negative effect on job seekers - is that many of the advertised positions will continue to go unfilled. They aren't real positions. They are ads to protect the PPP loans and delay or negate repayment. So potential job seekers may see a wealth of opportunity and jump ship, only to learn the hard way they aren't going to get placed quickly.
