The Great Re-Think of IT Staffing in North America

It's Monday and you know what that means! No, not Monday Night Football. No, not WWE Monday Night Raw, but another edition of the Tech Talent Times. And this week we are focusing on re-thinking the status quo in the realm of IT Staffing. One of the great things I like about Procom are the company values. Re-Thinking the Status Quo jumps out to me because in today's hiring environment, you can't keep doing things the same old way. The world is changing. We have electric vehicles, we talk to computers and have paper thin TV screens that allow you to use touch for commands. We don't use dot matrix printers anymore, we use 3D printers!

Workers everywhere are re-evaluating their lives and what's important to them in their lives regarding work life balance, and more. The pandemic prompted many to change their priorities toward finding positions that better align with their goals and passions.

And in true fashion, Procom was ahead of this with their 2023 Voice of Talent Report that lays out the state of the workforce of 2023. Inside, it provides opportunities for companies like yours to attract, engage and retain talent in this hypercompetitive market. You will also gain understanding of how organizations can strengthen their position as an employer of choice to get the top skills and talent they need. We surveyed 1,740 contingent workers and permanent employees and discovered that companies that focus on workplace experience tend to attract and retain the best of the best.

Company culture is catching up to compensation as a top talent priority. In today's environment the talent have higher expectations of the companies they work for. Talent are looking for things like Collaboration and Support, Meaningful Work, and Schedule Flexibility. If we looked at the ranking of concerns talent reported as such:

  1. Maximum Compensation - Are your salaries in line with your locality? Or are you asking for more with less?
  2. Collaborative/Supportive Work Environment - How does everyone speak to each other in your company?
  3. Minimal Commute- With Gas as high as $6 in some places, do you have flexible work options?
  4. Meaningful Work - Are your projects part of something larger? Something inspiring? What's the Mission Statement?
  5. Schedule Flexibility - Can you be flexible for working parents?
  6. A Positive Interview Experience - Are you putting candidates through 6 interviews only to turn them down later?
  7. Up-To-Date Tools and Technologies - What is the company's investment into software upgrades and current market tools?
  8. Company Stability - Be honest with candidates, even if you are a start up. The employee might be willing to take a chance to help.
  9. Hybrid-Work Opportunities- This is in line with the commute concerns.
  10. Professional Development - Will your employee be a potted plant, never moving?
  11. Company Commitment to DE&I - Do you see the bigger picture?
  12. Potential for Health Benefits - Have you examined your benefit offering and considered what would make a candidate accept the offer? Things like 100% Employer Paid Health Premiums.
  13. Frequency of Pay - Every two weeks? Every week? Once a month?
  14. In-Person Work Opportunities- For those of us (myself included) who like going into an office and being around the team, is this possible?

The pandemic and Great Resignation forced changes to how we work collectively and how companies recruit their talent. While companies have to be intentional and direct about their identity and values, it's critical to let the culture develop organically. No one truly knows what the future holds but instead of repeating old practices or ways of doing things because of tradition or falling into a comfort zone, let new ones emerge based on collaborative engagement between the leadership and the workforce.

In order to ensure your company is on it's way to the top like a rocket headed out of space, with lots of talent on board, you'll need to partner with a staffing agency that are also experts in workforce management. That's where my team at Procom can help. Let's connect and discuss more and see if a partnership makes sense.
