With great power comes great responsibility.
This week's podcast release takes us inside 'The Editor's Closet' in an interview with Sophie Merrick, award winning News Editor for Bauer Media's radio stations in the North West of England.
We're all fascinated by people and their personal stories. In Sophie's role she has the opportunity to give local communities a voice and bring their stories to life. She shares her view of what it means to be a journalist and her responsibility to share stories accurately and with empathy. It's about active listening, careful questioning and respect.?
Sophie gives us the lowdown on what to wear whilst reporting and helps us make the link between clothes, confidence and trust when she is out interviewing in the community. She's handled a number of incredibly challenging stories in the last year and her resilience is admirable.?Sophie explains the challenges of her role and how she encourages her team to think about where they can create positive impact through storytelling:
'When you get home at night and you sit there and you think 'that really happened' and you have to dust yourself down and go back and cover it again the next day. That resilience, that is part of the job and we want to be there for people....(on local radio) you are going there and you are not just saying 'what has happened' you are also saying 'how can we help?'?
Expect a conversation that is positive, honest and moving - with a special insight into what to wear on a night out in Liverpool!
