How can CLT theory be the guide to create a great lesson plan for teaching ESL ?
But first, what is CLT, you ask?
CLT (aka Communicative Language Teaching) isn't just about drilling vocabulary or studying grammar until their brain melts.
Nope, it's all about turning language learning into a fun and engaging adventure!
Picture this: Learners are not just memorizing boring textbook dialogues; they're diving headfirst into real-life situations, like ordering coffee at a bustling cafe or negotiating a killer deal on a vacation in Paris. ??
With CLT, it's all about throwing themselves into the linguistic deep end and learning to swim (or at least doggy paddle) through authentic texts and tasks.
No more snooze-worthy grammar lectures; instead, it’s interactive games and lively discussion. ??
But wait, there's more!
CLT isn't just about mastering the lingo.
It's also about embracing the cultural quirks and social nuances that make language come alive.
Get ready to explore new worlds.
They can make friends from around the globe, and maybe even pick up a few dance moves along the way. Cha-cha-cha! ??
If you're ready to take your students’ language skills from meh to magnificent, hop on board the CLT train and get ready for the ride of your linguistic life! ??
Creating a lesson plan for teaching English using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) theory is awesome!
Here's a brief list of things to include:
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) theory starts with knowing the learners’ level.
?
In my case the learners were upper intermediate and advanced levels.
I started with the topic, is it better to be a leader or a follower.
Then:
Set Objectives
I clearly defined what my students would achieve by the end of the lesson.

Engage Students
I start with a warm up activity with discussion questions relating to the topic.
Present New Language
I introduced the qualities of leaders and followers in sentences in a flashcard format in a pdf.
Practice Activities
Together we made a t-chart of the pros of cons of a leader and a follower,
Wrap-Up
Together we summarized what was learned.
Homework
The assignment was to complete the t-chart
Next Steps
In the next class I taught them how to write an opinion essay.
?
Remember, flexibility is key with CLT.
Be ready to adapt your lessons based on student needs and interests. ??
Good luck and have fun teaching!
