The psychological professions workforce is set for rapid expansion, says James Varty, programme manager at Psychological Professions Network Midlands , in our latest issue. Kick-started by the NHS Long Term Plan, this represents a revolution for psychological therapies and interventions, with a variety of new roles across the three workforce groupings of psychologist, psychological therapist and psychological practitioner. One of these practitioner roles is the mental health and wellbeing practitioner (MHWP) which is a great fit – and an exciting opportunity – for drug and alcohol services, as it addresses the all-round deep frustrations and the impasse felt by the client when being passed between mental health and substance use services.

Remember all the 'dual diagnosis' events of 15 years ago and the optimism of services working together seamlessly? Will the adoption of the MHWP in drug and alcohol services bring us closer to more integrated treatment?

Thoughts, feedback and personal experiences very welcome – give us your insights!
