I am often intrigued by what drives leaders to become leaders, and when they become leaders, what keeps them in a leadership role? It is a question I constantly ask, and the answers very often provide some interesting perspectives and insights into how successful the leader may be.
In many cases, leaders are handpicked by senior management based on their high levels of performance as an individual contributor, and often thrust into the leadership role with little or no transition plan, and no clear leadership blueprint. As a result, they do not have time to deeply consider why a leadership role is attractive to them, and hence may default to the perceived prestige the position may provide, or the status or symbolism of the role, as the key driver. And whilst these leaders may start out with the best of intentions and begin adding value in the short term, quite often they end up being divisive and subtract from the team.
Great leaders on the other hand, are multipliers. These are leaders who possess a servant's heart, are crystal clear on why they are in the leadership role, and who are committed to creating an environment where the team is able to first survive, and then thrive. Not only do they begin their leadership journey with strong positive intentions and add value, they very quickly multiply that value, resulting in exceptional results, not to mention, the creation of other leaders.
Their focus is on identifying and fostering other leaders, so that the team, the business or the organisation can enjoy sustained success. How do they do it?
