Great Leaders Know: Focus on What Truly Matters

Great Leaders Know: Focus on What Truly Matters

By Kim Groshek

In today’s fast-paced world, we’re constantly bombarded by an endless flow of information—news, social media, emails, and meetings. It can be overwhelming, to say the least. But here’s a truth every great leader knows: the real skill lies not in having access to all this information, but in knowing what to focus on.

As the quote goes: “When accessing all information is common, paying attention to important information is rare.”And how true it is! In a world full of distractions, the ability to focus on what truly matters—on what will drive growth, inspire your team, and move your organization forward—is more valuable than ever.

So, how do we do this? How can we, as leaders, stay intentional and focused?

  1. Prioritize What Aligns with Your Vision: Take a step back and reflect on your core values and the long-term goals of your team or organization. Let these guide your decision-making. Every piece of information we encounter should be weighed against this vision to determine if it's truly worth our attention.
  2. Minimize Distractions: While we can’t eliminate every distraction, we can certainly reduce them. Set boundaries for when and how you'll engage with emails, social media, or non-essential tasks. Consider implementing a “digital detox” or setting dedicated focus time each day.
  3. Be Present with Your Team: Leadership isn’t just about big decisions or long-term strategies. It’s about showing up for your team every day. Listen to them, support them, and encourage them to stay focused on what matters. Your actions will speak volumes.
  4. Delegate Effectively: Trust the expertise of others and delegate tasks that fall outside your core focus. Great leaders build great teams by empowering others to lead in their own areas.
  5. Stay Intentional: This is the key. Every day is a new opportunity to choose what matters. When we stay intentional with our actions and choices, we make a lasting impact on those around us.

Let’s keep encouraging each other to stay intentional, to eliminate distractions, and to focus on what truly matters. Together, we can create a supportive community of leaders who uplift one another and make a meaningful difference every single day.

Be great today—because greatness starts with the choices we make to focus on what counts.
