Great Lakes Crystal Technologies: A Story of Innovation and Internships

Introduction:

Keith Evans started as an Entrepreneur-In-Residence at the MSU Research Foundation in the summer of 2019 and cofounded Great Lakes Crystal Technologies (GLCT) shortly after. His story, combined with the company’s innovative approach, highlights the significant impact of internships in the high-tech industry.

Founding GLCT:

Leveraging decades of research at MSU in diamond materials and applications, GLCT’s mission is to become the leading provider of high-performance diamond materials for high-technology applications. The company's foundation is built on cutting-edge research and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with diamond materials.

Internship Program:

GLCT has actively participated in the STEAM Ahead program, supporting four student interns, three of whom transitioned to full-time employees. This program allows interns to gain hands-on experience in a high-tech environment and for the company to evaluate potential long-term employees.

Keith Evans values the program for its mutual benefits. "The program is great for interns who can kick our tires and if they decide not to go all in then they can move on without a short regular employment stint on their resume," he said. "It’s great for us for similar reasons."

Conclusion:

GLCT’s innovative approach and successful internship program underscore the importance of hands-on experience and mentorship in high-tech industries. By providing opportunities for interns, GLCT not only advances its mission but also helps shape the future of high-tech talent.
