The Great Job Mismatch is here

Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter which will highlight one LinkedIn trending topic per day curated and cultivated by a LinkedIn News editor, as well as the conversations happening around it.

Millions of jobs are going unfilled.

A recent report in The Wall Street Journal (that became a trending topic on LinkedIn) put it starkly:

"More than nine million Americans said in May that they wanted jobs and couldn’t find them. Companies said they had more than nine million jobs open that weren’t filled, a record high."

What is going on here? Why is it so tough to find workers despite a relatively high unemployment rate?

It seems like there are many reasons, with the pandemic and it knock-on effects being the prime cause.

Here are a few:

  1. Stimulus checks and better unemployment benefits have allowed unemployed workers to be choosier in finding work (though there are other countries with generous unemployment benefits but low unemployment and there is some evidence that cutting benefits hasn't done much).
  2. People moved away from where many of the jobs are.
  3. The economy shifted, leaving many workers without the skills needed in this new economy.
  4. A lack of childcare pushed many women (and some men) out of the workforce and they have yet to return.
  5. People realized that they didn't like their jobs; don't want to commute anymore; or wanted to change their lifestyles amid the pandemic. In other words, they had a kind of epiphany.

Here's what some LinkedIn members are saying on the topic:

Hiring managers of those millions of job openings are looking for millions of unicorns that are unique, special, and better than the rest of the millions.

I’ve been wondering about this phenomenon! Here I am at 50 working TWO jobs to undo the financial mess Covid made of hospitality and youngsters getting hired, trained then quit!!! It’s like a merry go round. Plus trying to talk/train people through the masks is tiring. What a mess??
