Why Unloved People Hate Themselves
Purpose as a verb, not a noun
In school, he was told, “You need to have a purpose.” So, he looked for it behind the swings while everyone was playing and in the eaves of the shed near the football field while everyone was cheering. After a while, he thought, “Something must be wrong with me.” In high school, everyone else seemed to have a purpose. Why couldn’t he find his? By the time he was in college, everyone introduced themselves by naming their purpose: I’m going to be a doctor. I’m going to be a pilot. I’m going to be a millionaire. I’m going to be president. This was all confusing. Then, he made friends with someone whose purpose seemed to be in building things. When he watched his friend chisel and sand wood, he could see how happy and engaged he was. He wanted a purpose like that. He wanted to love something that would bring him alive. That spring, on a clear night, he and his friend sat near a fire. The flames were mesmerizing and he wondered, can staring into the flames be a purpose? They sat there for hours and when the fire went out, he could see the brilliant wash of stars surrounding them. Then he knew. His purpose was to outlast the fires we all start, so he could find and love his place in the endless sky that no one built.?(Mark Nepo)
The Magic of Living Authentically: Finding the People Who Truly See You
The surest way to find people who truly see you, who resonate with your soul, is to live boldly and unapologetically as your most authentic self. Stop shrinking yourself to fit into spaces that were never meant for you.
Stop altering the raw and beautiful essence of who you are to meet expectations that do not honor your spirit. The moment you fully step into your truth, you create a space for the right people to find and embrace you there. Authenticity has a unique kind of magic. When you allow yourself to show up fully, without filters or fa?ades, you naturally attract those who align with your energy. These are the people who will welcome your truth with openness, who won’t flinch at your vulnerabilities or insights. They won’t just tolerate you—they will celebrate you. They will see all that you are and all that you’re becoming, and they will choose to stay.
On the other hand, when someone leaves because you’ve stopped pretending, it’s a gift. It’s space cleared for something more aligned. They were drawn to an incomplete version of you, a version you may have shaped to make them feel comfortable. And if they can’t handle and adapt to your unique personality, they were never meant to stay.
Their departure isn’t a loss; it’s a gain—an opportunity to make room for connections that honor your true self. Living authentically is a powerful act of liberation. It frees you from the endless, exhausting cycle of trying to please everyone. You let go of the need to mold yourself to fit expectations that do not serve you. Instead, you allow yourself to exist simply, fully, freely, and without apology.
And in doing so, the right people will find you. They will see your light and never ask you to dim it. They will celebrate the parts of you that others may have overlooked because those are the parts they cherish the most. When you live authentically, the relationships you attract feel lighter, deeper, and far more aligned. These are the people who respect your boundaries, embrace your growth, and love you deeply, even as you evolve.
And those who disappear?
Let them go with grace. They weren’t meant to walk this path with you, and their departure is simply a step toward alignment with your true journey. You don’t need everyone to stay. You only need those who feel like home and nurture that growth, those who uplift you, encourage your progress, and remind you of your worth when you forget it.
