Great Grantham News

It’s Wednesday and time for Great Grantham News!

This week sees Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day taking place on 17th March, which made me think about three well-known, including two UK-wide charities that call Grantham home!

First up is the Thera Trust, founded in Cambridgeshire in 1998. The organisation has its main office and administration hub located in Grantham. The works undertaking in Grantham, whether it be finance or procurement, help the trust undertake its fine work across the UK. In supporting people who have learning disabilities, making sure they always have choice and control over their own support. Thera help their service users in finding work, managing money or securing the right place to live as well as providing additional support to their families.

Next up is the UK largest Woodland and Forestry conservation charity, the Woodland Trust. Founded in 1972 by Ken Watkins in his Devon home, the Trust relocated to Grantham just 6 years later in 1978 and has called the town home ever since. Their RIBA award winning building was completed in October 2010 and is the Charity’s headquarters for it’s operations across all four nations of Great Britain. Now just passed its 50 year the Trust are proud to Create, Protect and Restore more than 1000 public woods with over 50 million trees growing.

Lastly, Grantham Foodbank founded in 2011 by the Grantham district Churches Together to support local people. Initially opening premises on St Catherine's Road in July 2011, relocation followed in October 2014 to Grey Friars where it remains operational to this day. Grantham Foodbank’s work remains needed and vital now with high inflation driving increases in the cost of living and household budgets being squeezed. Statistics from last week (6th March to 12th March 2023) tell a story of Grantham Foodbank supporting 179 people up 99% on the same week last year including 66 Children up a shocking 136% when comparing to the same week in 2022.

With Comic Relief drawing a lot of attention this week with coverage across all BBC Radio and TV stations, don’t forget about the good and needed work that is done right here in Grantham and it is great to see Grantham being home to these three amazing charities, whose work across the UK and in our community remains vital in 2023.
